OSRS 1-99 Mining Guide | Fastest XP, AFK Methods & Profit

Mining is one of the slowest skills in Old School RuneScape — and also one of the most useful. At peak efficiency using 3-tick granite, you can go from level 1 to 99 in roughly 122 efficient hours. Without tick manipulation, the fastest realistic path — Volcanic Mine — takes 160 to 200 hours. The AFK route through Motherlode Mine and Shooting Stars stretches to 250 to 350 hours. No matter how you slice it, Mining is a long-term commitment measured in months of regular play, not days.

But Mining also gates critical content. Level 70 Mining is required for Song of the Elves and the Quest Cape. Level 85 Mining lets you deal meaningful damage at Guardians in the Chambers of Xeric and the Tombs of Amascut — two of the three OSRS raids. Level 85 is also needed for the Achievement Diary Cape. And along the way, Mining pays: Blast Mine earns up to 800k GP per hour, Zalcano can hit 2M GP per hour with loot enabled, and runite ore at 85 Mining is 600k+ GP per hour for the active miner.

This guide covers every viable training method — from the sweaty 3-tick granite meta to the seven-minute-AFK Shooting Stars — with exact XP rates at every level bracket, current GE ore prices, and honest assessments of effort versus reward. And if you decide that 122 to 350 hours of clicking rocks is not how you want to spend your time, we cover the marketplace alternative too.

    Why Train Mining in 2026?

Mining does three things for your account, and none of them are optional if you plan to do endgame PvM:

    • Raids. Both Chambers of Xeric and Tombs of Amascut have Mining components. In CoX, the Guardians room requires mining the guardians — your damage scales directly with your Mining level. In ToA, the Akkha path and certain puzzle rooms involve mining. At 85+ Mining, you contribute meaningfully. Below 70, you are a liability.
    • Quests and diaries. Song of the Elves requires 70 Mining. The Quest Cape requires 70 Mining. The Achievement Diary Cape requires 85 Mining. These are not going away.
    • Passive GP. Mining is one of the few skills that generates profit while you train. Blast Mine, Zalcano, runite, and amethyst all turn your training hours into GP. A player who does Blast Mine from 75 to 99 can earn 100 million+ GP in profit. A player who does Zalcano (loot on) from 70 to 99 can earn over 1.5 billion GP — though at just 15k Mining XP per hour with loot enabled, that is a 500+ hour marathon.

    XP Boosts and Essential Unlocks

Before you mine your first rock, know what gear makes you faster. These items collectively increase your XP per hour by 10% to 25%:

    Pickaxe Progression

Your pickaxe determines how many ticks pass between mining attempts. Faster pickaxes = more XP per hour. Upgrade at every tier:

Note: the infernal pickaxe (requires 85 Smithing, made by combining a smouldering stone or dragon pickaxe with the infernal pick) has a 1/3 chance to burn ore for passive Smithing XP — useful for powermining methods where you drop ore anyway. The crystal pickaxe is strictly better for speed.

The priority order for new accounts: pickaxe upgrades → Varrock armour → Prospector kit → Celestial ring → Mining gloves. The uncharged celestial ring (invisible +4 boost) is worth getting early even before you have the stardust to charge it. The Prospector kit takes 10-20 hours at Motherlode Mine — significant time, but the 2.5% XP boost and diary/clue requirements make it worth obtaining eventually.

Low-Level Mining: Questing to Level 37

Do not mine copper and tin from level 1. Questing is faster.

Complete these quests — in this order — to reach level 37 Mining from a fresh account. Total time: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours:

    OrderQuestMining XPRequirementsTime

Total XP from these six quests: 27,525 Mining XP — enough for level 37. That skips roughly 1 to 2 hours of slow, low-level mining. If you want to push further, The Forsaken Tower adds 500 XP, and Enakhra’s Lament adds 7,000 XP at higher requirements. But for most accounts, questing to 37 lets you jump straight to iron powermining with an adamant pickaxe — saving both time and patience.

📖 “Fastest Methods: 3-Tick Granite, Iron Powermining & Volcanic Mine” (click to expand)

The Fastest Methods: Tick Manipulation and Beyond

Mining has the unusual distinction that its fastest training method — 3-tick granite — has been the meta for years and nothing has dethroned it. New methods have been added (Volcanic Mine, Blast Mine, Zalcano), but they offer alternatives for players who refuse to tick-manipulate, not upgrades over the granite meta.

Levels 15–45: Powermining Iron (No Tick Manipulation)

From level 15 to 60, find a 3-rock iron triangle — three iron rocks close enough that you can mine all three without moving. The best locations are the Al Kharid mine and the Isle of Souls mine. Mining all three rocks in rotation, then dropping the ore while they respawn, yields 45,000 to 55,000 XP per hour before level 60.

At level 60, move to the Mining Guild (Falador). Rocks respawn twice as fast inside the guild, and there are multiple 3-rock iron triangles near the bank chest. With the faster respawns, you can mine continuously without waiting — pushing rates to 70,000 to 80,000 XP per hour with a dragon pickaxe. You also earn Unidentified Minerals, which can be traded for mining gloves.

Use RuneLite’s Menu Entry Swapper to set iron ore to left-click drop. Drop ores while you wait for rocks to respawn — do not run to a bank. Banking iron ore dramatically slows XP rates and iron ore is worth only 77 GP each. Your time is better spent mining more rocks.

    Levels 15–45: 3-Tick Iron (Fastest Pre-Granite XP)

If you are willing to learn tick manipulation, 3-tick iron pushes Mining XP from ~15k per hour at level 15 to over 30,000 XP per hour — roughly double the non-tick-manipulated rate. The method uses a 3-tick cycle action (combining herb and tar, or using a knife on teak logs) between clicking each iron rock, bypassing the normal delay between mining attempts. You move between four iron rocks in a square, dropping ore as you go.

The best locations are the Isle of Souls mine (south of the dungeon entrance) and the Legends’ Guild mine. Both have four iron rocks close together. Three-tick iron is also good practice for 3-tick granite — the mechanics are nearly identical, and iron is more forgiving if you make mistakes.

Levels 45–99: 3-Tick Granite (The Fastest Mining XP in the Game)

Three-tick granite is the theoretical maximum for Mining XP. At level 45, it starts at around 87,000 XP per hour. At level 65, it passes 100k XP per hour. At level 99 with max efficiency, it peaks at roughly 125,000 to 134,000 XP per hour. No other Mining method comes close.

The method: start a 3-tick action (herb + tar or knife + teak log), click a granite rock, receive the ore, start another 3-tick action while clicking the next rock in a clockwise rotation, and repeat. Drop granite between clicks. You move every three game ticks (1.8 seconds) regardless of whether you successfully mine a rock — the rhythm must stay consistent or the cycle breaks.

The preferred location is now the Cape Conch mine (requires partial completion of Troubled Tortugans) — it has no desert heat, so you do not need waterskins or the Desert Amulet. Use fairy ring CJQ, climb the rocks shortcut south (61 Agility), use the stepping stone east, and run southeast to the mine. Without 61 Agility, take a charter ship to the Great Conch and use the rowboat to the eastern island, then run south.

If you prefer the traditional Bandit Camp Quarry, you will need desert heat protection (waterskins, circlet of water, Desert Amulet 4, or Hitpoints cape + regen bracelet). Teleport via Camulet or Pharaoh’s Sceptre. After completing the Hard Desert Diary, the Camulet teleports directly to the quarry entrance.

For tick manipulation, your pickaxe tier does not matter — tick manipulation bypasses the normal pickaxe speed, so a bronze pickaxe works the same as dragon. The infernal pickaxe is valuable here: it burns 1/3 of granite for passive Smithing XP, reducing the amount you need to drop manually.

XP rates by level (3-tick granite):

    LevelXP/hr (EHP / Efficient)
    45~87,000
    55~95,000
    65~103,000
    75~109,000
    85~114,000
    95~119,000
99~126,000 (up to ~134k with perfect execution)

Three-tick granite is punishing to learn. Expect to spend 2 to 5 hours mastering the rhythm before you see rates above 80k XP per hour. Once you have it, it becomes muscle memory — and it remains the fastest Mining XP in the game from level 45 onward. Whether the carpal tunnel is worth it is a question only you can answer.

Levels 70–99: Volcanic Mine (Fastest Without Tick Manipulation)

Volcanic Mine on Fossil Island is the best Mining XP in the game for players who refuse to tick-manipulate. In teams of 3 to 5 players, following designated roles (capping, fixing, mining the boulder), you can earn 64,000 XP per hour at level 70, scaling to 84,000-94,000 XP per hour at level 99. With dedicated boosting accounts, some teams push past 100k XP per hour.

Requirements: 50 Mining (but start after 70 for viable teams), Bone Voyage quest, 150 Kudos at Varrock Museum, 30 numulites per entry (or a one-time 3,000 numulite fee for permanent access), 40+ Prayer for Protect from Missiles, and good food. The mine deals heavy damage — players take hits from falling rocks, lava, and the mine’s instability. Bring a prayer potion and high-healing food (sharks or better).

The official world is 323. Find teams through the Grouping interface’s Volcanic Mine chat channel. There are three main approaches: capping (solo, more points, ~50k XP/hr), fixing (solo, more AFK, ~20k-60k XP/hr scaling with level), and group method (4-5 players, fastest XP, ~64k-94k XP/hr). Group method requires coordination and an understanding of each role. An in-depth guide to each role is beyond the scope of this article, but the Volcanic Mine community resources on the OSRS Wiki cover them thoroughly.

Volcanic Mine is the default recommendation for players who want fast Mining XP without tick manipulation. It is significantly faster than Motherlode Mine and pays enough reward points for useful shop items. It is also one of the few group-skilling activities that rewards coordination — a rare thing in Old School.

📖 “More Fast Methods: Blast Mine, Zalcano & Gem Rocks” (click to expand)

Fast and Profitable: Blast Mine, Zalcano, and Gem Rocks

Not everyone wants to chase maximum XP. These methods trade speed for profit — or offer a middle ground.

Levels 43–99: Blast Mine (Profit + Fast XP)

The Blast Mine, located in northern Lovakengj, uses dynamite to blast ore from hardened rock — giving you ores up to 10 levels higher than your Mining level. This means you can get runite ore as early as level 75 instead of 85.

At level 75, Blast Mine earns 65,000 to 76,000 XP per hour, scaling to 87,000 to 101,000 XP per hour at level 99. Profit starts at roughly 180k GP per hour at level 45, rises to 620k GP per hour at 90, and reaches ~800k GP per hour at 99. Going from 75 to 99 at the Blast Mine earns over 100 million GP in profit.

The method: mine out a section of wall, place dynamite, light the fuse, and move to the next section before the explosion hits. Following a specific pattern (the northeast area is optimal) lets you avoid all damage while continuously mining. Wear weight-reducing clothing (Graceful) and use a ring of endurance if available — you will be running constantly. Stamina potions are mandatory. The Prospector outfit can be worn for bonus XP when collecting ore from the operator. A pickaxe is not required to mine the blasted ore, but the dragon pickaxe special attack (+3 visible Mining boost) helps for better ore rolls.

Blast Mine is the sweet spot for players who want fast XP and profit simultaneously. It is click-intensive but far less punishing than tick manipulation — and the GP makes it easier to justify the hours.

Levels 70–99: Zalcano (The Mining Boss)

Zalcano, the skilling boss beneath Prifddinas, offers a unique trade-off. With loot enabled, you earn up to 2 million GP per hour but only 13,500 to 15,000 Mining XP per hour — Mining becomes the byproduct, not the purpose. With loot disabled (toggle at Rhiannon), you earn 50,000 XP per hour at 70, scaling to 90,000-92,000 XP per hour at 99 — making it one of the fastest non-tick-manipulation methods in the game. Toggling loot off still gives a roll at the unique drops (crystal tool seed at 1/200, Zalcano shard) and the pet. You just forfeit the regular resource drops.

Requirements: Song of the Elves (grandmaster quest — 70 in Agility, Construction, Farming, Herblore, Mining, Smithing, and Woodcutting). This makes Zalcano inaccessible to mid-game accounts and a meaningful unlock for accounts that have completed the Elf questline.

The fight: mine glowing rock formations in one of four corners, smelt the tephra at the furnace to the east, imbue it at the altar to the west, and throw the imbued tephra at Zalcano and her golems. Stand on blue demonic symbols for accuracy and damage boosts. When Zalcano’s armour breaks, she falls — mine her directly for 12 to 16 seconds. Repeat until defeated. Groups of 2 to 5 players are standard. Bring stamina potions and Saradomin brews for extended trips.

If you did Zalcano with loot enabled from level 70 to 99, you would earn over 1.5 billion GP — but it would take 500+ hours. That is not a training method; that is a career. Most players toggle between XP mode (when they want Mining levels) and loot mode (when they want GP) depending on their goals.

Levels 40–99: Gem Rocks (3-Tick for Speed, Normal for Profit)

Gem rocks in Shilo Village are a profitable alternative that becomes competitive when tick-manipulated. With 3-tick manipulation, they earn 93,000 XP per hour at level 50, scaling to 110,000 XP per hour at 99 — approaching granite rates while also generating profit (~720k GP per hour at max rates). Without tick manipulation, rates drop to 46,000-75,000 XP per hour — still profitable but no longer competitive with Volcanic Mine or Blast Mine for speed.

Requirements: Medium Karamja Diary (for the underground gem mine with a deposit chest), a charged amulet of glory (triples your chance to mine gems), and ideally a gem bag to reduce banking. The underground mine has many gem rocks in a loop, so you can continuously mine without world-hopping. Use the deposit chest next to the bank to empty gems each lap.

Gem rocks are also one of the fastest ways to obtain the rock golem pet — the pet rate is based on the base XP of the rock, and gem rocks have a high base XP (65 each). For pet hunters, gem rocks are the meta.

📖 “AFK Methods: Stars, Motherlode Mine & Calcified Rocks” (click to expand)

AFK Methods: Mining While You Do Other Things

Mining is not a skill most people want to actively train for 200 hours. The AFK methods exist for everyone who wants to mine while working, studying, or playing another account. They are slower — sometimes dramatically so — but the freedom they give your attention is the point.

Levels 10–99: Shooting Stars (The King of AFK)

Shooting Stars are the most AFK Mining method in the game — and one of the most AFK skilling methods in all of OSRS. Each star has 9 tiers, and each tier takes roughly 7 minutes to mine. You click once when the star degrades to the next tier, and then you are AFK for another 7 minutes. A full star lasts 42 to 63 minutes.

XP rates are modest: ~23,500 XP per hour at level 60, scaling to ~31,500 XP per hour at level 99 (including time spent finding new stars). The trade-off is attention — you can work a full shift, watch a movie, or play another account while your character mines in the background. The stardust you collect can be exchanged for the celestial ring (2,000 stardust), soft clay packs, or gem bags — providing modest passive profit.

To find stars: use the Star Miners website (map.starminers.site) which shows all active stars in real-time, or join the in-game Shooting Stars friends chat through the Grouping interface. Teleports to common star landing zones speed up travel — a house tab, a varrock teleport, and a skills necklace cover most locations.

A few caveats: stars sometimes land in the Wilderness or other dangerous areas — skip those. Stars below tier 6 require 60+ Mining to mine effectively. And while Shooting Stars are beloved by the community (there is always a crowd at any active star), the XP rates mean 99 Mining through stars alone takes 350+ hours. Most players use stars as a supplement — a way to make progress on days when they cannot actively play.

Levels 30–99: Motherlode Mine (The Middle Ground)

Motherlode Mine is the most popular Mining training method in OSRS for good reason: it balances AFK time, XP, and profit better than any alternative. On the lower floor (30-57 Mining), veins last 23 to 27 seconds and grant 13,000 to 35,000 XP per hour. On the upper floor (57+ Mining, 100 Golden Nuggets to unlock), veins last 36 to 40 seconds and grant 45,000 XP per hour at 60, scaling to 60,000-65,000 XP per hour at 99 with max upgrades.

The loop: mine pay-dirt from veins on the walls, deposit it in the hopper (the water carries it to the ore sack), and collect the cleaned ores from the sack when full. The ores — coal, gold, mithril, adamantite, and runite — accumulate in the sack and can be sold for consistent profit. At higher levels, Motherlode Mine earns roughly 200,000 to 400,000 GP per hour depending on ore prices.

Key unlocks: 180 Golden Nuggets for the full Prospector outfit (2.5% XP boost), 100 nuggets for upper floor access, and 200 nuggets for the expanded ore sack (holds more before you need to empty it). The Medium Falador Diary provides a shortcut (54 Agility) directly to the bank chest area. Access via a skills necklace teleport to the Mining Guild.

Motherlode Mine from 30 to 99 takes roughly 225 to 325 hours — slower than Volcanic Mine or Blast Mine, but each hour requires only a few clicks per minute. For players who want to train Mining without sacrificing their attention entirely, Motherlode Mine is the standard.

Levels 41–99: Calcified Rocks (New from Varlamore)

Added with Varlamore (requiring partial completion of Perilous Moons), calcified rocks in the Cam Torum Mine provide an AFK option that also generates Blessed Bone Shards for Prayer training. Each vein lasts roughly 70 seconds — the longest single-click AFK time of any Mining method outside of Shooting Stars. Occasionally, water leaks from some veins — mining those increases your success rate by 15%.

XP rates at calcified rocks: ~23,500 XP per hour at level 50, scaling to ~49,000 XP per hour at 99. You simultaneously earn ~3,000 Blessed Bone Shards per hour at 99, worth roughly 15,000 to 18,000 Prayer XP when offered at the Varlamore libation bowl. With tick manipulation, calcified rocks can reach ~94,000 XP/hr and ~5,500 bone shards per hour at 99 — competitive with granite if you are already using tick manipulation and value the Prayer XP.

Calcified rocks are best for accounts that need both Mining and Prayer XP, or for players who want a slightly more AFK alternative to Motherlode Mine. The 70-second AFK time per vein is the longest single-click Mining AFK in the game outside of Shooting Stars — and unlike stars, you do not need to world-hop or scout for new locations.

    Passive Mining XP: Zeah Runecrafting

If you plan to train Runecrafting at the Arceuus Blood Altar (77+ Runecrafting), you will mine dense essence blocks as part of the process. From 77 to 99 Runecrafting, you earn roughly 1.2 million Mining XP — about 20% of the XP needed for 99 Mining. At higher Mining levels, each dense essence block lasts up to 3 minutes. This is entirely passive — you are training Runecrafting, and Mining XP accumulates in the background. If 99 Runecrafting is in your plans, do it before you finish Mining. It will save you 10 to 20 hours of dedicated Mining later.

📖 “Profitable Methods: Runite, Amethyst & Ironman Strategies” (click to expand)

Maximum Profit: Runite, Amethyst, and the Money-Making Meta

If GP is your priority — funding gear upgrades, Construction, Prayer, or just building a bank — these Mining methods are among the most profitable skilling activities in OSRS.

    Level 85: Runite Ore (600k+ GP/hr)

At level 85 Mining, runite rocks become minable. Each runite ore is worth ~10,350 GP (July 2026), and an active miner can extract 60+ ores per hour at the right location — roughly 600,000+ GP per hour. There are 15 runite rock locations across Gielinor, but the ones near banks are typically crowded with other miners and bots. The meta: choose a remote location with less competition, even if it is farther from a bank. A full inventory of 27 runite ore (541,000 GP at current prices) is worth the longer run.

Varrock armour 4 gives a 10% chance to mine double ore at runite — a direct 10% profit increase — which is a substantial boost over thousands of runite ore mined. Bring a dragon pickaxe for the +3 special attack boost, and wear the Prospector outfit if you still need Mining XP.

Runite mining is competitive and active — you need to track respawn timers and arrive as the rock becomes available. On high-population worlds, expect to compete with multiple other miners. On low-population worlds at off-peak hours, you can have a rotation of rocks to yourself. For players who enjoy this rhythm, runite mining is one of the most profitable skilling activities in OSRS outside of bossing.

    Level 92: Amethyst (300k GP/hr, Very AFK)

Amethyst crystals in the Mining Guild unlock at level 92 and are the most AFK profitable mining in the game. Each amethyst sells for ~3,000 to 3,250 GP (July 2026), and at maximum efficiency with expert mining gloves, a crystal pickaxe, and full attention, you can mine 80 to 100 amethyst per hour — roughly 260,000 to 325,000 GP per hour at 20,000 to 25,000 XP per hour.

The AFK factor: amethyst veins take 30 to 60 seconds to deplete. With expert mining gloves (from Unidentified Minerals in the Mining Guild), veins last longer before depletion — increasing AFK time. Varrock armour and the celestial ring do not work with amethyst, so focus on the mining gloves for AFK extension.

Amethyst is highly demanded because it is used to create amethyst ammunition — darts, arrows, and bolts that are best-in-slot for many PvM scenarios. The market is stable, the profit is consistent, and the method is almost entirely AFK. At 25k XP per hour, 99 Mining through amethyst alone would take 520 hours — so most players use amethyst as a profitable supplement, not the primary training method. For ironmen, amethyst is essential for endgame ammunition and is one of the most important Mining unlocks.

Ironman Mining: Gathering Supplies, Not Just XP

Ironmen face a different Mining calculus. Every ore you mine is one you do not have to buy — which changes which methods are worth doing.

    Sandstone (35+): Crafting Supplies

Mining sandstone in the desert quarry is the primary way ironmen gather sand for Crafting. At high Mining levels, you can gather over 2,000 buckets of sand per hour at ~45k Mining XP per hour. The sand is then used with Superglass Make (77 Magic, Lunar spellbook) to create molten glass for Crafting training. For ironmen, sandstone mining is less about XP and more about supplying one of the most expensive Crafting materials in the game. Most ironmen will spend dozens of hours here.

Gem Rocks: Jewellery and Teleport Supplies

Gem rocks produce opals, jades, and red topazes — essential for making dodgy necklaces, burning amulets, and other teleport jewellery that ironmen depend on. Mining gem rocks with a charged amulet of glory and a gem bag yields over 1,200 gems per hour at high Mining levels. Three-tick gem rocks are meta for ironmen chasing fast XP while stockpiling gems.

    Blast Mine, Zalcano, Volcanic Mine

All three are viable for ironmen. Blast Mine provides ores 10 levels early, which means earlier access to adamantite and runite for Smithing. Zalcano provides crystal shards, ores, bars, onyx bolt tips, and the crystal tool seed — all valuable to an ironman account. Volcanic Mine provides ores and high XP rates without requiring tick manipulation. The ironman Mining path is typically: quest to 37 → Motherlode Mine for Prospector → Sandstone for Crafting → Gem rocks for jewellery → Blast Mine / Volcanic Mine / Zalcano depending on goals → Amethyst at 92 for ammunition.

    Free-to-Play Mining

Free-to-play Mining is a slower, more limited version of the members’ meta. The fastest F2P path: Doric’s Quest to 10 → powermine copper and tin to 15 → powermine iron to 99. Iron in F2P grants roughly 35,000 to 45,000 XP per hour — roughly half the members’ rate, since you lack the Mining Guild, dragon pickaxes, and the Varrock armour’s double-ore effect. At that rate, 99 Mining in F2P takes 300 to 370 hours.

Shooting Stars work in F2P but give reduced experience and no access to the reward shop (celestial ring is members-only). The Barronite mine (below Ice Mountain, after the Below Ice Mountain quest) is a low-effort alternative at ~15k-20k XP per hour. In terms of profit, adamantite ore at 70 Mining earns roughly 115k GP per hour in F2P, and runite at 85 earns 500k+ GP per hour — but the only F2P runite rocks are deep in the Wilderness, making the method risky and unreliable.

Overall: if you plan to train Mining to any meaningful level, get membership. The skill is balanced around the 3.5× XP multipliers and faster respawns that members enjoy. Training Mining in F2P is playing on hard mode with no benefit.

Grind It or Buy It: Mining’s Real Cost in Time

Mining, unlike Prayer or Construction, does not cost GP to train. It costs time — and it costs more time than almost any other skill in OSRS. At 122.5 efficient hours (3-tick granite), it is slower than all buyable skills and most gathering skills — only Slayer and Agility compare in terms of time investment. For a casual player using Motherlode Mine or Shooting Stars, 99 Mining takes 250 to 450 hours. That is 10 to 18 full days of in-game time — likely spread over 3 to 12 months of regular play.

Here is what those hours are worth:

Training PathTime to 99GP Earned (Approx.)Time Value at Min. Wage ($7.25/hr)Marketplace Cost (Account)
    3-Tick Granite (fastest)122-130 hrs0 GP$885-$943$100-$200
    Blast Mine (fast + profit)150-180 hrs~100M GP$1,088-$1,305$100-$200
    Motherlode Mine (balanced)225-325 hrs~50M-80M GP$1,631-$2,356$100-$200
    Shooting Stars (AFK)350-450 hrs~10M-15M GP in stardust$2,538-$3,263$100-$200

The comparison is stark. At minimum wage, 122 hours of your time is worth roughly $885 — nearly 4× to 9× the cost of a pre-leveled account with 99 Mining. Even Blast Mine, which generates ~100M GP in profit along the way, yields time-value equivalent at a small fraction of minimum wage. If you value your free time at anything above $1 per hour, buying a Mining-trained account is the more economically rational choice.

But Mining is also one of the skills where the journey has value beyond the XP. The first time you hit a 3-tick rhythm without breaking it. The moment you unlock the Mining Guild. The group coordination at Volcanic Mine. The satisfaction of watching your Motherlode Mine sack fill with runite ore. Those experiences are real, and no marketplace purchase can create them.

For a first-time account, grinding Mining — at a pace you can sustain — is usually the right call. For a second account, a PvM alt, or a player who has already done the grind once and just wants to raid, the marketplace math is unambiguous. Mining is a time sink. Only you can decide what that time is worth.

How to Buy OSRS Accounts and Gold Safely

If you decide the Mining grind is not worth your time, here is how to buy without getting burned:

    1. Only Use Escrow-Protected Marketplaces

Never send money directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until you confirm you have received the account. If the seller disappears, you dispute and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse.

    2. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

With the Jagex account system, the registered email is the single point of control. If a seller cannot or will not transfer it, walk away. After purchase: change the email, change the password, remove all old recovery information, enable 2FA, unlink third-party accounts (Google, Steam, Apple), and set a bank PIN — all within 10 minutes.

    3. Check Seller Reputation

Look for verified badges, multiple completed sales, recent positive reviews mentioning smooth delivery, and detailed listing descriptions. Sellers who push off-platform deals, refuse to show the account in-game, or have vague one-liner descriptions are red flags.

~122.5 efficient hours (WiseOldMan EHP: quests → prospector + celestial ring → 3-tick granite). Realistically with tick manipulation: 130-150 hours. Without tick manipulation (Volcanic Mine or Blast Mine): 160-200 hours. AFK route (Motherlode Mine + Stars): 250-450 hours. Mining is one of the slowest skills in OSRS — comparable to Slayer and Agility in total time investment.

3-tick granite from level 45 to 99, peaking at 125k-134k XP per hour at 99. Requires intense, constant clicking — every 1.8 seconds without interruption. The preferred location is now the Cape Conch mine (Troubled Tortugans) for its lack of desert heat, or the Bandit Camp Quarry (requires heat protection). Without tick manipulation, Volcanic Mine in a coordinated team provides the fastest rates at 64k-94k XP/hr from level 70.

Shooting Stars — up to 7 minutes per click at 28k-32k XP/hr. Perfect for working, studying, or playing another account. Calcified rocks (Varlamore) offer 70 seconds per vein at 44k-49k XP/hr. Motherlode Mine upper floor offers 36-40 seconds per vein at 45k-65k XP/hr with profit. Amethyst (92+) is 30-60 seconds per vein at 20k-25k XP/hr with 300k GP/hr profit.

For a main account chasing 99 with the fastest methods: barely. The 2.5% XP boost saves roughly 3 hours on the road to 99, but obtaining the outfit takes 10-20 hours at Motherlode Mine — a net time loss. However, the Prospector helmet is required for a hard Falador Diary task and the full set for a master clue step. The WiseOldMan EHP path includes getting the outfit and celestial ring together (both from ~35k-490k XP), implying it is part of the optimal route when bundled. For ironmen: yes, the Prospector outfit is worth it because Motherlode Mine also provides ores for Smithing.

Zalcano (loot on): up to ~2M GP/hr at 70+ (requires Song of the Elves). Blast Mine: 180k-800k GP/hr from 45-99 (requires dynamite). Runite ore: ~600k+ GP/hr at 85 Mining at uncrowded locations. Amethyst: ~260k-325k GP/hr at 92 Mining, nearly fully AFK. Motherlode Mine: ~200k-400k GP/hr passively. A player who does Blast Mine from 75 to 99 can earn over 100M GP in profit.

85 Mining is the recommended minimum for Chambers of Xeric (Guardians room) and Tombs of Amascut (various puzzles). At 85+, your mining damage is competitive. Below 70, you are a liability to your team. Mining is also required for the Achievement Diary Cape at 85 and the Quest Cape at 70 (Song of the Elves). If you plan to raid, budget the time to reach 85 Mining — it is not optional for serious PvM accounts.

If you want 99 Mining in under 150 hours: yes. Three-tick granite is roughly 50% faster than the next-best method. If you value your wrists or play OSRS to relax: no. Volcanic Mine, Blast Mine, and Zalcano all offer reasonable XP rates without intense clicking. Most players never tick-manipulate and still reach 99 — it just takes longer. There is no wrong answer.

Crystal pickaxe (71 Mining, 50 Agility, Song of the Elves): fastest tick rate (1/4 chance of a 2-tick action vs 1/6 for dragon). Only worth the cost (~25M GP in crystal shards) if you are doing hundreds of hours of Mining. Dragon pickaxe (61 Mining, ~569k GP): the standard endgame pickaxe. Has a +3 mining special attack. Infernal pickaxe (61 Mining, 85 Smithing): same speed as dragon, but 1/3 chance to smelt ore for passive Smithing XP — excellent for powermining methods where you drop ore anyway.

Account purchases carry inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service. The safest approach: use a marketplace with escrow protection (like PlayerBay), ensure the seller transfers the registered email (Jagex account system), immediately secure the account after purchase (change email, password, remove recovery info, enable 2FA, set bank PIN), and choose sellers with verified status and positive reviews. Never complete a deal off-platform.

    The Bottom Line

Mining is a skill you plan around, not a skill you knock out in a weekend. At 122.5 efficient hours — and 250 to 350 hours for the methods most players actually use — it demands patience and consistency more than any other gathering skill in OSRS. But it also gates your raids, your quest cape, your diary cape, and your access to some of the most profitable skilling activities in the game. You cannot ignore it. The only question is how you approach it.

The meta is clear: quest to 37, then choose your lane. If speed is everything, 3-tick granite from 45 to 99 is unmatched — 125k+ XP per hour, 99 in 122 to 130 hours. If you refuse to tick-manipulate, Volcanic Mine in a coordinated team gives you 84k to 94k XP per hour with zero tick manipulation. If you want profit alongside XP, Blast Mine delivers both — 100M+ GP earned alongside 99 Mining. If you want to barely pay attention, Motherlode Mine, Shooting Stars, and calcified rocks let you make progress while you live your life. And if you want maximum GP with minimum Mining XP, Zalcano (loot on) gives you 2M GP per hour — just accept that 99 Mining through Zalcano alone is a 500+ hour project.

The new methods — calcified rocks from Varlamore, the Cape Conch mine for heat-free 3-tick granite, and the Shooting Stars community tools — have made Mining more accessible than ever. But the core reality has not changed: Mining is slow. The players who stick with it are the ones who find a rhythm they can sustain. Whether that rhythm is 3-tick granite, Volcanic Mine groups, or Shooting Stars on a second monitor while they work — the right method is the one you will actually do for hundreds of hours.

And if 122 to 350 hours of clicking rocks sounds like more patience than you have, the marketplace makes the math simple. At minimum wage, the time it takes to mine your way to 99 is worth $885 to $3,200+ in pre-tax income — far more than the $100 to $200 a pre-leveled account costs. Whether that trade-off makes sense depends entirely on what your time is worth.

OSRS 1-99 Prayer Guide | Fastest, Cheapest & Safest Methods

Prayer is the most efficient skill in Old School RuneScape. At absolute peak efficiency — dagannoth bones at the Chaos Altar for the first 738,000 XP, then superior dragon bones for the remaining 12.3 million — it takes roughly 6.6 efficient hours from level 1 to 99. That is faster than any buyable skill except Construction. It is also one of the three most expensive 99s in the game, costing anywhere from 75 million GP (dragon bones at the Chaos Altar) to 275 million+ GP (superior dragon bones at a gilded altar), depending on how much risk and how much clicking you are willing to accept.

And Prayer is not optional. Level 43 unlocks Protect from Melee, Protect from Missiles, and Protect from Magic — the three prayers that make almost all PvM in OSRS possible. Level 70 unlocks Piety, the single biggest melee DPS upgrade in the game. Levels 74 and 77 unlock Rigour and Augury, which do for ranged and magic what Piety does for melee. Without Prayer, you are playing a fundamentally weaker version of the game.

This guide covers every viable training method — from the bone shard altar in Varlamore to the Chaos Altar in the Wilderness, from gilded altars in player-owned houses to the newly buffed offering spells — with exact XP rates, current costs, and honest assessments of risk. And if you decide that grinding 75 to 275 million GP for bones is not how you want to spend your time, we cover the marketplace alternative too.

    How Prayer Works

Prayer is deceptively simple: every 8 Prayer levels increases your combat level by 1, so 99 Prayer adds 12 combat levels. Higher Prayer also increases the effectiveness of prayer potions — they restore 25% of your level plus 7, so a higher level restores more points per dose.

Prayer bonus from your gear reduces how quickly your prayer points drain. Every 30 Prayer bonus halves your drain rate. This is why prayer-boosting gear (Proselyte armour, Sunfire Fanatic armour, god books, prayer-bonus rings) matters for Slayer and PvM — it extends your trips, reduces potion costs, and makes AFK combat possible.

You cannot profit from training Prayer. Every method costs GP. The question is how much — and whether the time you would spend grinding bones is better spent elsewhere.

The Methods: Every Way to Train Prayer, Ranked

As of July 2026, there are six viable Prayer training methods for main accounts — plus passive options that accumulate XP in the background. Here is the full comparison:

The First 43 Levels: Questing Before Spending

Before you spend a single GP on bones, complete every quest that awards Prayer XP. This is free XP that skips the most expensive levels — and the quests are fast:

Recruitment Drive1,000Black Knights’ Fortress, Druidic Ritual20 min
    Rag and Bone Man (both)5,000 + 5,000Various slayer/kill requirements1-2 hrs

These quests collectively award roughly 40,000+ Prayer XP — taking you from level 1 to level 36-37 Prayer without spending a single coin. From there, you need only ~13,000 XP to reach 43 for protection prayers — fewer than 200 dragon bones at a gilded altar, costing roughly 600,000 GP.

Completing the quests first is not strictly necessary — Prayer is fast enough that you can buy your way from 1 to 43 in under an hour for roughly 600k GP at a gilded altar. But for ironmen and budget-conscious players, the quest XP route saves money and provides useful quest unlocks in the process.

Method 1: The Chaos Altar — Cheapest Fast XP (at a Price)

The Chaos Altar in level 38 Wilderness is the single most cost-effective Prayer training method in OSRS. It offers the same 3.5× XP multiplier as a gilded altar, but every bone has a 50% chance of not being consumed. Over thousands of bones, this effectively doubles your supply — making each purchased bone worth roughly 7× its base XP on average.

At current prices (dragon bones ~3,000 GP each), 99 Prayer costs roughly 75 million GP at the Chaos Altar — less than half the ~155 million GP a gilded altar costs for the same bones. The savings are dramatic. From 43 to 99, the Chaos Altar saves you roughly 77 million GP compared to a gilded altar with dragon bones.

The trade-off is that you are in the Wilderness. Players actively hunt Chaos Altar trainers because they know bones are valuable. Even so, the math favors the altar — if you use the suicide method (one inventory of bones, no gear, die or teleport after using them all), you will occasionally lose an inventory to a PKer, but the 50% bone save more than compensates. Most experienced players estimate that even with PK losses, the Chaos Altar saves 30-40% over a gilded altar.

    How to Do It Safely

    The standard safe method:

    1. Buy a Burning Amulet (or Ghorrock teleport tablets). Bring nothing else — no gear, no items, nothing you would mind losing.
    2. Withdraw a full inventory of unnoted bones from your bank.
    3. Teleport to the Lava Maze (Burning Amulet) and run southwest to the Chaos Altar.
    4. Use all your bones on the altar. For fastest XP, use the 1-tick method — manually click each bone on the altar in rapid succession, which processes them roughly 3× faster than auto-use.
    5. After using all bones, die or teleport back to your respawn location. The enchanted symbol (Mage Arena 2 miniquest reward) lets you suicide quickly. Alternatively, click the nearby wine jug to drain your health.
    6. Bank, repeat.

The RuneLite Menu Entry Swapper makes 1-ticking much easier — set your bones’ left-click to “use” instead of “bury,” then drag your inventory over the altar and spam-click. With the Entity Hider plugin, you can hide other players at the altar to reduce visual clutter.

Some players bring noted bones and unnote them at the NPC just outside the altar for continuous training — this is faster but dramatically riskier, since you are standing in the Wilderness with your entire bone supply. For most players, the suicide method (one inventory per trip) strikes the right balance between speed and safety.

Play on low-population PvP worlds and off-peak hours to minimize PK encounters. The altar is in multi-combat Wilderness, so a team of PKers can kill you before you can teleport. Always keep the altar in view on your minimap and be ready to react.

📖 “Gilded Altar & Bone Shards Deep-Dive” (click to expand)

Method 2: The Gilded Altar — Safe, Reliable, Popular

The gilded altar in a player-owned house is the standard Prayer training method. With both incense burners lit (using marrentill herbs), it provides 3.5× the base XP of any bone. A dragon bone that gives 72 XP when buried gives 252 XP at a gilded altar. A superior dragon bone gives 525 XP.

You do not need 75 Construction to use this method. On World 330 (the official house party world), players host open gilded altars in Rimmington with both burners lit — free to use. Walk into any advertised house, find the altar room, and offer your bones. As of 2026, hosts keep burners lit continuously, so you never need to bring marrentill or a tinderbox yourself.

    The W330 Rimmington Loop

    1. Buy your bones in bulk from the Grand Exchange.
    2. Withdraw bones as noted inventory, plus a Rimmington teleport (house tab or redirect scroll) and at least 50k coins.
    3. Unnote bones at Phials in the Rimmington general store — he charges 5 GP per bone and is located 5 tiles from the house portal.
    4. Enter a hosted house (right-click the house advertisement board, filter for gilded altars with a “Y”).
    5. Use bones on the altar. Run back to Phials once finished.
    6. For maximum speed, 1-tick by using each bone manually on the altar. With dragon bones, this pushes XP rates from ~300k/hr to nearly 450k/hr — at the cost of carpal tunnel.

For the absolute fastest safe XP, you can hire a bone runner — another player who retrieves more bones from the bank while you offer at the altar. This is the fastest safe method in the game, approaching 1.5M+ XP/hr with superior dragon bones, but costs extra for the runner’s time. Most players skip this — Prayer is already fast enough without paying for a second person.

The gilded altar is the default recommendation for anyone who wants predictable, zero-risk training. The Chaos Altar is cheaper. The libation bowl is faster. But the gilded altar is where most players train — and for good reason. It just works.

Method 3: Bone Shards — The New Varlamore Meta

Introduced with Varlamore, the blessed bone shard method has quickly become the best-in-slot Prayer training for accounts that can afford the upfront time investment. Here is how it works:

    1. Bless bones at the exposed altar on Ralos’ Rise (south of the Teomat) — this converts regular bones into blessed bones.
    2. Chisel blessed bones into shards — a dragon bone becomes 58 blessed bone shards; a superior dragon bone becomes 121.
    3. Bless jugs of wine at the same altar. Optionally add Sunfire splinters to create blessed sunfire wine, which increases the XP per shard from 5 to 6.
    4. Fill the libation bowl in the northern building of the Teomat with blessed wine.
    5. Sacrifice shards at the bowl — up to 100 per action. Spam-click for maximum speed or let it auto-process for AFK training.

The numbers are compelling. At a gilded altar, one dragon bone gives 252 XP. Through the bone shard method with blessed sunfire wine, the same dragon bone yields roughly 348 XP (58 shards × 6 XP) — a 38% increase over the gilded altar. For superior dragon bones, the difference is even larger: 525 XP at a gilded altar versus 726 XP (121 shards × 6 XP) through bone shards.

The catch is time. Blessing and chiseling bones into shards is not instant — it takes a few seconds per inventory. When you factor in the preparation time, the effective XP rate drops. On a main account buying bones from the GE, the blessing and chiseling time is time you are not gaining Prayer XP. For ironmen who were going to process bones anyway, the method is a strict upgrade.

The libation bowl itself is fast — spam-clicking can exceed 1 million Prayer XP per hour at the bowl, making it theoretically one of the fastest XP sources in the game. But this rate only applies during the sacrificing phase. When the time spent blessing and chiseling is included, the effective rate drops to roughly 600k-800k XP/hr for most players. Still faster than a gilded altar, still completely safe, and still more XP per bone than any other method.

Requirements: Children of the Sun quest to access Varlamore, level 30 Prayer to use the libation bowl. Twilight’s Promise speeds up the method, and Perilous Moons unlocks the ability to mine bone shards directly (useful for ironmen, irrelevant for mains buying bones).

📖 “Ensouled Heads, Offering Spells & the New Wyrmscraig Altar” (click to expand)

Method 4: Ensouled Heads — Cheap, Slow, and Combat-Gated

Ensouled heads use the Arceuus spellbook to reanimate dead monsters at the Dark Altar in Arceuus. Kill the reanimated creature, and you receive Prayer XP — typically 130 to 1,560 XP per head, depending on the type. The method also gives Magic XP (from casting) and combat XP (from killing the reanimated creature), making it one of the few Prayer methods that trains multiple skills at once.

The cost numbers are attractive. At ~1.5 to 4.5 GP per XP, ensouled heads are significantly cheaper per XP than dragon bones at a gilded altar (~10-12 GP/XP). The best value heads — chaos druids, giants, and bloodveld — come in at under 2 GP per XP. Abyssal demon and dragon heads give the highest XP per head (1,300 and 1,560 XP respectively) at roughly 3.5 to 4.5 GP/XP.

The trade-off is speed. Even with a dwarf multicannon to kill reanimated creatures quickly, you are looking at roughly 80,000 to 220,000 XP per hour — significantly slower than any altar method. Heads also have low trade volume on the Grand Exchange, so buying them in bulk requires leaving offers overnight at above-market prices.

    Ensouled heads are best for:

    • Ironmen who accumulate heads naturally through Slayer
    • Players training magic and combat alongside Prayer who value the bundled XP
    • Budget-conscious accounts willing to trade speed for cost savings

For a main account chasing 99 in under 20 hours, ensouled heads are not the play. For a patient player who does not mind the pace, they are the cheapest active training method in the game.

Method 5: Offering Spells — Buffed in 2026

The Summer Sweep-Up 2026 buffed Arceuus offering spells from 3× to 3.5× XP, making them more competitive with altar methods. Both spells require completion of A Kingdom Divided and have high Magic requirements:

SpellMagic LevelConsumesXP per Spell (3 items)CooldownBest Use Case
    Demonic Offering843 ashes3×3.5× base scatter XP4.8 secondsInfernal ashes: ~594k theoretical XP/hr, ~6.5 GP/XP
    Sinister Offering923 bones3×3.5× base bury XP4.8 secondsSuperior dragon bones: ~810k theoretical XP/hr, ~0.5 GP/XP (rune cost only)

Here is the thing about offering spells that most guides gloss over: the 4.8-second cooldown limits how many bones you can process per hour. At 600 casts per hour, you process 1,800 bones or ashes per hour — far fewer than the 3,000-6,000+ you can process at an altar. This means offering spells are slower than altars for any given bone type, even though the XP per bone is the same (3.5× at both offering spells and gilded altar).

The real advantage of offering spells is the rune cost is negligible — a single soul rune and a blood rune per cast — meaning you are paying almost exclusively for the bones or ashes themselves, with no altar access needed. This makes Sinister Offering competitive for ironmen near the Fountain of Rune (free rune casting), and Demonic Offering excellent for accounts with a surplus of infernal ashes.

Bottom line: use Demonic Offering for ashes (especially infernal), and skip Sinister Offering for bones — bones are faster at any altar. The cooldown makes offering spells a niche option, not a replacement for traditional training.

New in 2026: The Wyrmscraig Altar (Sailing Content)

Added with the Sailing skill, the Wyrmscraig Altar is a new mid-ground between the gilded altar’s safety and the Chaos Altar’s savings. It provides the standard 3.5× XP but with a 25% chance to save each bone — a middle ground for players who want a discount without the Wilderness. Located on a raised island reachable only by boat, it requires 67 Sailing to access and 57 Construction to build the altar for use. The island is safe, and banking requires sailing back — making it somewhat slower than a gilded altar with a nearby bank but significantly safer than the Chaos Altar. For mid-level accounts with some Sailing levels, it is a solid option. For accounts that have not touched Sailing, the level requirement makes it a detour rather than a shortcut.

📖 “Ironman Methods, Passive XP & F2P” (click to expand)

    Ironman Prayer Training

Ironmen face a different challenge: bones are not bought from the GE — they are gathered. This flips the entire meta toward methods that maximize XP per bone rather than XP per hour spent at an altar.

    The low-level ironman path:

    1. Quest to 36-37 Prayer using the quest list above. Restless Ghost and Priest in Peril alone get you past level 15.
    2. Kill blue dragons in Taverley Dungeon (safespottable, 61 Ranged or Magic) for dragon bones. Alternatively, green dragons in the Wilderness (faster kills but PK risk).
    3. Use bones at the Chaos Altar — the 50% bone save effectively doubles your gathered supply. Suicide method only. For hardcore ironmen, skip the Chaos Altar and use bone shards instead.
    4. Collect ensouled heads from Slayer as a passive supplement.
    5. At higher combat, boss drops become the primary bone source. Zulrah drops noted dragon bones. Vorkath drops superior dragon bones. Cerberus, Hydra, and Dagannoth Kings all drop high-XP bones in large quantities.

The Ectofuntus (4× XP per bone, zero risk, requires grinding bones into bonemeal and collecting buckets of slime) is the traditional ironman method. It gives the most XP per bone of any method and is entirely safe. It is also painfully slow — grinding bones and collecting slime manually reduces the effective XP rate to ~30,000-50,000 per hour. The bone shard method has largely replaced the Ectofuntus for ironmen who have access to Varlamore.

The Forthos Dungeon altar (near the red dragons in Hosidius) is a niche option for ultimate ironmen — you kill red dragons on-site and offer their bones at the altar a few rooms away, eliminating the need to bank.

WiseOldMan’s ironman EHP for Prayer assumes ~1137 hours at Wilderness green dragons (340 bones/hr, scaled to ~600k true Prayer XP rate). In practice, most ironmen spread Prayer training across their entire account progression — collecting bones from Slayer tasks, bossing, and Managing Miscellania over months and years rather than grinding it all at once.

Passive Prayer XP: Train Prayer Without Trying

Five items provide Prayer XP in the background while you do other content:

    ItemUnlockWhat It DoesXP Rate
BonecrusherMorytania Hard DiaryAutomatically buries bones from monsters you kill, giving half the normal bury XPVariable — adds up to significant XP over 99 Slayer
Bonecrusher NecklaceCombine bonecrusher + dragonbone necklaceSame auto-bury effect, but also restores prayer points. Ideal for chinning/bursting maniacal monkeys.Keeps prayer full indefinitely on bone-dropping tasks
Ash SanctifierKourend Hard DiaryAutomatically scatters demonic ashes from kills, giving half the normal scatter XPAdds up on dust devil, nechryael, and abyssal demon tasks
EctoplasmatorSoul Wars (40 Zeal Tokens)Grants Prayer XP when killing spectral creatures (aberrant spectres, ankous, Barrows brothers, etc.)Modest — only worth it if you enjoy Soul Wars
God Eggs (Woodcutting Guild)Bird nests from WoodcuttingExchange god eggs at the Woodcutting Guild shrine for 100 Prayer XP each + a bird nest rewardTrivial XP, but entirely passive

None of these will get you to 99 Prayer. But over hundreds of hours of Slayer, the bonecrusher alone can contribute millions of XP — XP you did not have to spend GP or time to earn. If you plan to train Slayer to 99, get the bonecrusher as early as possible.

    Free-to-Play Prayer

Free-to-play Prayer training is, bluntly, not worth it. The fastest F2P method is simultaneously burying big bones and scattering vile ashes — doing both actions at the same time for roughly 100,000 XP per hour. At that rate, 99 Prayer takes over 110 hours and costs roughly 180 million GP. Obtaining membership — even if only to train Prayer — is one of the single best decisions a free-to-play account can make. The entire skill is balanced around the 3.5× altar multipliers that members have access to. Training Prayer in F2P is playing on hard mode with no benefit.

Cost to Key Milestones: Exact Numbers

Here is what it costs to reach each major Prayer milestone using dragon bones, the standard currency of Prayer training. All figures use July 2026 GE prices (~3,000 GP per dragon bone):

MilestoneXP NeededGilded Altar (3.5×)Chaos Altar (7× effective)Bone Shards (Sunfire, ~4.8×)
    1 → 43 (Protection Prayers)50,339200 bones — ~600K GP~100 bones — ~300K GP~145 bones — ~435K GP
    43 → 70 (Piety)687,0392,727 bones — ~8.2M GP~1,364 bones — ~4.1M GP~1,975 bones — ~5.9M GP
    43 → 74 (Rigour)1,041,5394,133 bones — ~12.4M GP~2,067 bones — ~6.2M GP~2,993 bones — ~9.0M GP
    43 → 77 (Augury)1,419,5585,634 bones — ~16.9M GP~2,817 bones — ~8.5M GP~4,080 bones — ~12.2M GP
    43 → 99 (Skillcape)12,976,425~51,500 bones — ~155M GP~25,750 bones — ~77M GP~37,300 bones — ~112M GP

Rigour and Augury also require their respective prayer scrolls — Rigour from Chambers of Xeric (~18M GP), Augury from the same (~3M GP). These are one-time unlocks, not consumable costs.

    A few things to note:

    • Superior dragon bones are faster but dramatically more expensive. At ~22,750 GP each and 525 XP per bone at a gilded altar, 43→99 costs roughly 565 million GP — nearly 4× the cost of dragon bones. Use them only if you have disposable GP and value speed above all else.
    • The Chaos Altar cuts costs roughly in half across every milestone. If you can tolerate the occasional PK death, the savings are massive — 77 million GP saved from 43 to 99 with dragon bones alone.
    • Bone shards sit between the Chaos Altar and gilded altar in cost but offer higher XP rates during the sacrificing phase. They are best for accounts that want speed without the Wilderness.
    • Piety at 70 Prayer is the single biggest account upgrade in the game for melee combat. If you are on a budget, aim for 70 and stop. You can push to 77 for Rigour/Augury later when your bank is stronger.

The Grind It or Buy It Equation

Prayer is the most extreme example of OSRS’s buyable skill problem. The training itself is fast — 10 to 45 hours depending on your bone choice and method. The real time sink is earning the GP to buy the bones.

Here is the math for 70 Prayer (Piety) — the most important milestone for most accounts:

How You Fund 70 Prayer (~8.2M GP, Gilded Altar)GP/hr SourceHours to Earn GPPlus Hours to TrainTotal Time
    Mid-game Slayer~500k/hr~16.4 hrs~2.3 hrs~19 hrs
Herb runs (passive)~1.9M effective/hr~4.3 hrs (spread over days)~2.3 hrs~7 hrs active
    Buy 10M OSRS goldN/A0 hrs~2.3 hrs~2.3 hrs + ~$3-$5

And for 99 Prayer (~155M GP at gilded altar, ~75M at Chaos Altar):

How You Fund 99 PrayerGP/hr SourceHours to Earn GP (Gilded)Hours to Earn GP (Chaos Altar)Plus Training Time
Slayer bossing (Hydra, Cerb)~2-4.5M/hr34-78 hrs17-38 hrs+10-45 hrs training
    Herb runs + birdhouses (passive)~1.9M effective/hr~82 hrs active~40 hrs active+10-45 hrs training
    Raids (CoX, ToA)~5-15M/hr10-31 hrs5-15 hrs+10-45 hrs training
    Buy OSRS gold (155M)N/A0 hrs0 hrs~$47-$78
    Buy a 99 Prayer accountN/A0 hrs0 hrs~$150-$300

At the U.S. federal minimum wage, the 34 to 78 hours it takes to earn the GP for 99 Prayer at a gilded altar is worth roughly $247 to $566 in pre-tax income. Buying the gold — or buying an account with 99 Prayer already trained — costs a fraction of that in both time and money. For a player who values their leisure time at anything above minimum wage, the marketplace math is even more favorable.

This is not an argument that you should buy gold. Plenty of players enjoy earning their upgrades — the first time you activate Piety on a boss fight is a genuine milestone. But before you spend 50+ hours grinding GP for bones, you should know what those hours are worth. Prayer is a buyable skill. The only question is who does the buying — you, with your time, or the marketplace, with a fraction of a day’s wages.

How to Buy OSRS Gold and Accounts Safely

If you decide the GP grind for Prayer is not worth your time, here is how to buy without getting burned:

    1. Only Use Escrow-Protected Marketplaces

Never send money directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until you confirm delivery. If the seller disappears, you dispute and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse.

    2. For Gold: Face-to-Face Trading Only

Reputable sellers trade gold in-game, face-to-face, at the Grand Exchange. Avoid Wilderness drops, Party Room transfers, or any unverifiable method. Check seller profiles for verified badges, completed sales, and recent positive reviews.

    3. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

With the Jagex account system, the registered email controls everything. If a seller cannot or will not transfer it, walk away. After purchase: change the email, change the password, remove old recovery information, enable 2FA, unlink third-party accounts, and set a bank PIN — within 10 minutes.

~6.6 efficient hours (WiseOldMan EHP, using dagannoth bones then superior dragon bones at Chaos Altar, up to 2,000k XP/hr). Realistically: 10-18 hours with superior dragon bones at a gilded altar (~700k-1.5M XP/hr), 25-45 hours with dragon bones at a gilded altar (~300k XP/hr), or 25-45 hours at the Chaos Altar with dragon bones (similar XP rate, half the cost). Prayer is one of the fastest buyable 99s in OSRS — only Construction and Cooking are faster.

At current GE prices (July 2026, dragon bones ~3,000 GP): ~155M GP at a gilded altar, ~75M GP at the Chaos Altar (50% bone save), ~112M GP through Varlamore bone shards with sunfire wine, or ~565M GP with superior dragon bones at a gilded altar (fastest safe method). The Chaos Altar is by far the most cost-effective — you save roughly 77 million GP compared to the gilded altar with dragon bones.

Superior dragon bones at the Chaos Altar — up to ~2,000k XP/hr at EHP rates, or ~500k-700k XP/hr for a realistic player. This requires 70 Prayer to use superior dragon bones and carries PK risk. The fastest safe method is superior dragon bones at a gilded altar (~700k-1.5M XP/hr, depending on 1-tick speed and whether you use a bone runner). The Varlamore libation bowl can exceed 1M XP/hr during the sacrificing phase, but preparation time (blessing and chiseling bones) reduces the effective rate.

For most players: yes. The 50% bone save effectively halves your cost to 99. Even if you lose an inventory of bones to a PKer once every 10-20 trips, the savings still dramatically outweigh the losses. Use the suicide method (one inventory per trip, no gear), play on low-population worlds, and train during off-peak hours. If you are a hardcore ironman, skip the Chaos Altar — one death ends the account. Use bone shards or the gilded altar instead.

Dragon bones are the sweet spot for 95% of players. At ~3,000 GP each giving 252 XP at a gilded altar (~12 GP/XP), they offer the best balance of speed and cost. Superior dragon bones are roughly twice as fast (525 XP per bone, ~500k-700k XP/hr realistically) but cost ~22,750 GP each (~43 GP/XP at a gilded altar) — nearly 4× the cost per XP. Use superior dragon bones only if you already have disposable GP and want to minimize training time. Use dragon bones for everything else.

43 is required. Protection prayers gate almost all PvM content. 70 is your next target — Piety is the single biggest melee DPS upgrade in the game and costs roughly 8.2M GP from 43 at a gilded altar. 74 and 77 (Rigour and Augury) are endgame goals — they also require prayer scrolls from Chambers of Xeric. 99 is a luxury. It adds 12 combat levels and the skillcape teleport (unlimited house teleports plus all house portals), but the real power gains stop at 77. Most accounts stop at 70-77 unless they are chasing max or want the cape.

In terms of XP per bone: yes. Dragon bones give 252 XP at a gilded altar and 290-348 XP through bone shards (depending on whether you use sunfire wine). In terms of real-world XP per hour: it depends. The libation bowl spam-clicking is fast — over 1M XP/hr during the sacrificing phase — but blessing and chiseling bones takes time. For main accounts buying bones from the GE, the total effective rate is roughly 600k-800k XP/hr — faster than a gilded altar but with more preparation steps. For ironmen who were going to process bones anyway, bone shards are a strict upgrade. The method requires Children of the Sun, 30 Prayer, and access to Varlamore.

Dragon bones at the Chaos Altar — ~75M GP to 99 at ~5-6 GP/XP. For active methods with zero risk, ensouled heads are the cheapest at ~1.5-4.5 GP/XP, but they are roughly 3-4× slower than altar methods. For passive training, the bonecrusher (Morytania Hard Diary) is free — it adds millions of XP over hundreds of Slayer hours without costing a single GP.

Not actively. Every method that involves bones or ashes costs GP — the only variable is how much. The bonecrusher and ash sanctifier provide free passive XP from monster kills, but they are half the normal bury/scatter rate and are supplements, not primary training methods. Quest XP is free but finite — the available quests give roughly 40,000 Prayer XP, enough for level 36-37. After that, you pay.

Gold buying carries inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service. The safest approach: use a marketplace with escrow protection (like PlayerBay), choose verified sellers with positive reviews, and accept only face-to-face in-game trades at safe locations. Never send money directly to a seller — escrow means your payment is held until you confirm delivery.

    The Bottom Line

Prayer is the skill that separates accounts that can do PvM from accounts that can do PvM comfortably. Level 43 unlocks protection prayers. Level 70 unlocks Piety — a 23% damage increase, 25% defence increase, and 23% accuracy increase that applies to every melee hit you will ever land. Levels 74 and 77 unlock Rigour and Augury, which do the same for ranged and magic. There is no substitute. There is no workaround. You either train Prayer, or you play a weaker account.

    The training meta is clear:

    • Cheapest fast method: Dragon bones at the Chaos Altar. ~75M GP to 99. Half the cost of a gilded altar. Accept the PK risk, use suicide runs, and bank the savings.
    • Best safe method: Dragon bones at a gilded altar (World 330). ~155M GP to 99. Zero risk, predictable, the standard approach.
    • Fastest safe method: Superior dragon bones at a gilded altar. ~565M GP to 99. For accounts with more GP than time.
    • New best-in-slot: Bone shards through Varlamore. More XP per bone than any altar method, over 1M XP/hr at the libation bowl, completely safe. The preparation time (blessing and chiseling) is the only drawback.

For most players, the right answer is 70 Prayer with dragon bones — either at the Chaos Altar if you can tolerate the Wilderness, or at World 330 if you cannot. 70 Prayer unlocks Piety, which is where the real game begins. Everything after that — 74, 77, 99 — is optimization. Powerful optimization, but optimization nonetheless.

And if grinding 8 million GP for 70 Prayer or 155 million GP for 99 sounds like more runecrafting than you signed up for, the marketplace exists. At minimum wage, the time it takes to earn the GP for 99 Prayer at mid-level money-makers is worth far more than the cost of buying the gold outright. Whether that trade-off makes sense is a question only you can answer — but it is a question worth asking.

  • OSRS 1-99 Construction Guide | Fastest Methods, Full Costs & Your Maxed House

OSRS 1-99 Construction Guide | Fastest Methods, Full Costs & Your Maxed House

Construction is the fastest buyable skill in Old School RuneScape — and one of the most expensive. At peak efficiency with gnome benches and a demon butler, you can go from level 1 to 99 in roughly 12.8 efficient hours, burning through about 190 million GP in mahogany planks in the process. That is roughly 15 million GP per hour spent — the financial equivalent of setting a small fire in your bank and feeding it one mahogany plank at a time.

But Construction is also the single most useful skill in the game for quality of life. A maxed Player-Owned House — achievable at level 84 with boosts — gives you an ornate rejuvenation pool (full stat and run restore), a full jewellery box (unlimited teleports to nearly every major location), a portal nexus (customizable teleport hub), a fairy ring, a spirit tree, and an occult altar (spellbook switching without visiting the pyramid). And with the release of Sailing in late 2025, Construction now directly gates your ship upgrades — you need 87 Construction for the maximum boat in the game.

This guide covers every viable training method, the exact GP and time cost of each, the gear and unlocks you need before starting, and — if you decide burning 190 million GP on planks is not how you want to spend your money — how to buy the gold or an account to skip the grind.

    Why Train Construction in 2026?

Before Sailing, the answer was simple: a maxed Player-Owned House is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in the game. An ornate rejuvenation pool restores all your stats, hitpoints, prayer, run energy, and special attack — plus any reduced stats — in a single click. A full jewellery box teleports you to the Grand Exchange, Edgeville, Draynor, Castle Wars, Ferox Enclave, and a dozen other locations without consuming charges. A portal nexus can hold 30+ teleports. A fairy ring and spirit tree in the same loading zone as your pool and jewellery box means your house becomes the central hub for everything you do in Gielinor.

With Sailing, Construction now has a second reason to exist: your ship upgrades are gated by your Construction level. The camphor hull (66 Construction), ironwood hull (77 Construction), and rosewood hull (87 Construction) all require you to build the parts yourself — the shipwright NPC cannot construct them for you. A rosewood sloop hull costs over 11 million GP in materials alone. If you want the best boat in the game, you need 87 Construction. No way around it.

And at 99, the Construction skillcape provides one of the best teleports in the game: unlimited teleports to your house, plus teleports to every house portal in Gielinor — Rimmington, Taverley, Pollnivneach, Hosidius, Rellekka, Brimhaven, Yanille, Prifddinas, Fremennik province, and the newly added Aldarin.

Method Comparison: Every Path to 99, Side by Side

Construction is defined by a cost-speed trade-off more extreme than any other skill in OSRS. The fastest method costs nearly twice as much as the cheapest “fast” method — and 5× more than Mahogany Homes. Here is every viable training method, ranked fastest to slowest:

    MethodUnlock LevelXP/hr (Peak)Plank TypeGP/XPCost to 84Cost to 99Time to 99Intensity

All costs calculated at July 2026 Grand Exchange prices: oak plank ~462 GP, teak plank ~829 GP, mahogany plank ~2,089 GP. Servant costs additional. Mahogany Homes Expert costs assume ~974k GP/hr in planks and bars.

The pattern is stark: gnome benches buy you 99 in under 13 hours but cost 171 million GP. Mounted mythical capes take 2.4× longer but cost roughly 40% less. Mahogany Homes costs 80% less than gnome benches — but takes nearly 5× as long. Every Construction decision is a GP-for-time equation, and the “right” answer depends entirely on what your time is worth.

    📖 “Low-Level Training (1-33) & Pre-52 Methods” (click to expand)

    Low-Level Training: Levels 1–33

The first 33 levels of Construction are fast regardless of method — you can reach 33 in 20 to 30 minutes for under 300k GP. There are three approaches:

    Option 1: Daddy’s Home Miniquest (Levels 1–8)

The Daddy’s Home miniquest in Varrock takes 10 to 15 minutes and awards enough XP to reach level 8 Construction. It also introduces the Mahogany Homes contract system and gives you a free Player-Owned House — saving you the 1,000 GP purchase from an estate agent. Worth doing on any fresh account, though it is not mandatory.

Option 2: Traditional POH Training (Levels 1–33)

Buy a house from any estate agent (1,000 GP), then build and remove low-level furniture. You will need roughly 100 regular planks, 250 oak planks, 200 steel nails, and 30,000 coins. Build the highest-level furniture available for each plank type — the XP per plank is similar across items, but furniture that uses more planks at once lets you spend more time building and less time removing.

Key logistics: buy planks from the Grand Exchange, unnote them at Phials in Rimmington (standing next to the house portal), enter your house in building mode, and cycle through build-and-remove until you run out. At level 20, you can hire a servant from the Servants’ Guild in northeastern Ardougne — but the cook and other low-level servants are so slow that Phials is faster until you unlock the human butler at level 40.

Option 3: Sailing Construction (Levels 1–33)

After completing the Pandemonium quest (a short, easy quest that serves as Sailing’s tutorial, started at Port Sarim), you can access a shipwright’s workbench. Two convenient locations near banks are Catherby and Port Khazard. Start with wooden repair kits, move to oak, then teak — each tier unlocks at the corresponding Construction level. Reaching level 30 takes about 20 to 30 minutes and costs roughly 200k to 300k GP. The advantage over POH training is that the workbench processes items automatically — you click once and your character crafts for ~28 seconds without further input.

The Fast Methods: Mahogany Tables and Gnome Benches

If speed is all that matters, the path is simple: oak larders from 33 to 52, mahogany tables from 52 to 77, gnome benches from 77 to 99. Total cost: roughly 190 to 200 million GP. Total time: roughly 13 to 15 efficient hours.

    Level 33–52: Oak Larders

Oak larders require 8 oak planks and grant 480 XP per build — 60 XP per plank, consistent with all oak furniture. At roughly 450,000 XP per hour with efficient clicking, you will spend 30 to 45 minutes in this bracket. Use the RuneLite Menu Entry Swapper plugin to set left-click to “Build” and “Remove” — this eliminates the right-click menu, which is the single biggest speed increase available. Unnote planks at Phials in Rimmington (or use a butler once you unlock one at 40 Construction). You need two bedrooms with beds to hire a butler from the Servants’ Guild in Ardougne.

Level 52–77: Mahogany Tables (Fastest Pre-77 Method)

Mahogany tables are built in a Dining Room and consume 6 mahogany planks for 840 XP — 140 XP per plank. At peak efficiency with a demon butler, you can reach ~900,000 XP per hour. The optimal rotation: build 3 tables, remove 2, while the demon butler fetches 24 planks from your bank — a 22-tick inventory cycle on a low-ping world. On higher-ping worlds, drop to 2 builds and 2 removes per cycle.

Cost from 52 to 77: roughly 9,660 mahogany planks (~20 million GP) plus ~500k in servant fees. Time: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours.

If you are on a budget, oak larders can carry you to 74 (for oak dungeon doors at ~550k XP/hr) or all the way to 99. Mounted mythical capes unlock at 50 (requires Dragon Slayer II) and cost about 40% less than mahogany tables at the cost of roughly half the XP rate.

Level 77–99: Gnome Benches (Fastest Method in the Game)

Gnome benches — officially called mahogany benches, built in a Superior Garden — are the fastest Construction XP in OSRS. They consume the same 6 mahogany planks and grant the same 840 XP as mahogany tables. The difference is mechanical: because two bench hotspots sit directly adjacent in the Superior Garden, you can remove one bench while simultaneously opening the build interface on the other, eliminating the downtime between build and remove actions.

At peak execution — tick-perfect timing with a demon butler fetching 24 planks per trip — gnome benches push past 1,100,000 XP per hour. Realistically, most players sustain 900k to 1,000k XP per hour during focused sessions. Cost from 77 to 99: roughly 82,566 mahogany planks (~171 million GP) plus ~4.3 million in servant fees.

The method requires intense focus. You stand on the inner tile between both bench hotspots, hold down the “1” key to select dialog options automatically, and follow a precise rhythm: remove built bench → click other hotspot to build → repeat, while the butler cycles between bank trips. Every tick counts. Do not attempt this on mobile.

📖 “Servants & RuneLite Setup for Efficient POH Training” (click to expand)

Servants and RuneLite: The Efficiency Multipliers

Two things separate a 15-hour Construction grind from a 30-hour one: your butler and your RuneLite configuration.

    Butler Strategy

Servants are unlocked at level 20 Construction, but the only ones worth using are:

    ServantUnlockSpeedMax Items/TripCost/TripUse Case
Human Butler40 Construction, 2 BedroomsModerate205,000 GP every 8 tripsBest for mounted mythical capes (demon would be too fast)
Demon Butler50 ConstructionFast2610,000 GP every 8 tripsRequired for mahogany tables and gnome benches — anything slower wastes XP

At level 58 Construction, build a servant’s moneybag in your house. It holds coins and automatically pays your servant when they request payment — eliminating the payment dialogue entirely. This is a small unlock that saves seconds per banking cycle, which compounds to hours over the full grind.

The demon butler costs roughly 10,000 GP every 8 bank trips, which adds 4 to 5 million GP to your total cost over the 52-to-99 grind. This is not negligible — but compared to the 190 million GP you are already spending on mahogany planks, it is a rounding error. Use the demon butler for all mahogany methods.

    RuneLite Configuration

    Two plugins are essential:

    • Menu Entry Swapper: Hold shift and right-click any buildable hotspot to set the left-click option to “Build” and the remove option to “Remove.” This eliminates the right-click menu entirely. Approved by Jagex. Without this, efficient Construction is physically impossible — you lose a tick on every single action.
    • Construction QOL: Remaps the hotkeys so you can build and remove with the same key. Eliminates the mental load of switching between keys during high-intensity gnome bench rotations.

Set up both plugins before you buy your first inventory of planks. The difference between a configured RuneLite and a vanilla client is roughly 200,000 to 300,000 XP per hour at the top end — the equivalent of shaving 3 to 5 hours off the 52-to-99 grind.

📖 “Mid-Range & Budget Methods: Mythical Capes, Oak Doors, and Teak Benches” (click to expand)

Mid-Range Methods: Fast Without the Full Mahogany Cost

Not everyone wants to spend 190 million GP on 13 hours of plank-clicking. The mid-range methods trade some speed for substantial cost savings:

Level 50: Mounted Mythical Capes (Cheapest “Fast” Method)

Mounted mythical capes are the hidden gem of Construction training. Built in a Quest Hall, they require 3 teak planks and 1 mythical cape — and when you remove the furniture, you get the mythical cape back. This means each build gives 370 XP (123 XP per teak plank, compared to the standard 90 XP) while costing only the 3 teak planks. At current prices (~829 GP per teak plank), this is roughly 7.6 GP per XP — nearly half the cost of mahogany methods.

The catch: you need Dragon Slayer II completed to obtain a mythical cape from the Myth’s Guild. DS2 requires 200 Quest Points, several grandmaster quest prerequisites, and a challenging boss fight against Galvek. If you were already planning to do DS2 for the Quest Cape, this method is a bargain. If you were not, the quest requirements add dozens of hours to your timeline.

At peak efficiency with a human butler (the demon butler is actually too fast for this method — you run out of planks before he returns), you can reach ~430,000 XP per hour. Cost to 84: roughly 22 million GP. Cost to 99: roughly 98 million GP. Time to 99 from level 50: roughly 31 hours.

Level 74: Oak Dungeon Doors (The Oak Sweet Spot)

Oak dungeon doors consume 10 oak planks for 600 XP — the same 60 XP per plank as all oak furniture, but in a faster package because each build consumes more planks at once. At ~550,000 XP per hour, they are roughly 20% faster than oak larders and roughly 50% slower than gnome benches — at roughly half the cost.

Built in a Dungeon room (you will need stairs going down), oak doors require a demon butler — the 10-plank-per-build consumption rate means the human butler cannot keep up. Cost to 84 from 74: roughly 20 million GP. Cost to 99 from 74: roughly 109 million GP. Time from 74 to 99: roughly 22 hours.

Level 77: Teak Benches (The Teak Alternative to Gnome Benches)

Teak benches use the same Superior Garden hotspot as gnome benches but with teak planks instead of mahogany. At ~575,000 XP per hour and ~130 million GP to 99, they sit between oak doors and gnome benches on both the speed and cost curves. They are a solid option if you want the bench rotation technique but cannot stomach the mahogany price tag.

    Sailing Construction: The AFK Revolution

Sailing introduced the shipwright’s workbench — a new way to train Construction that is slower than traditional POH methods but dramatically less click-intensive. After completing the Pandemonium quest, you can craft repair kits and hull parts at workbenches near banks, with the character processing items automatically.

Repair kits are the most AFK option: each inventory processes for roughly 28 seconds without any input. At mahogany tier (47 Construction), this yields ~250,000 XP per hour while requiring you to click only twice per minute — once to start crafting, once to bank. For players working from home or playing a second account, this is transformative. Construction has always been the least AFK-friendly skill in the game; Sailing repair kits are the first genuine “second monitor” option.

Hull parts use more planks per action and give higher XP rates — but at the high tiers (ironwood, rosewood), they become prohibitively expensive. Rosewood hull parts cost roughly 30 GP per XP, nearly double the mahogany plank rate. For training purposes, stick to repair kits at mahogany tier or below. Ironwood repair kits are viable if you want faster XP and can afford the premium, but rosewood repair kits are for Sailing — not for Construction training.

The workbench locations matter. The two best are Catherby and Port Khazard — both have banks within a few tiles of a workbench. For maximum efficiency, fill a plank sack (obtained from Mahogany Homes) to reduce bank trips.

Who should use Sailing Construction? Anyone who wants to train Construction while doing something else. At 250k XP/hr, 99 takes roughly 45 hours — more than triple the gnome bench route — but 43 of those 45 hours are spent watching your character work while you answer emails, watch content, or play another account. If you have already done the click-intensive Construction grind on another account, the Sailing workbench is the civilized way to train.

📖 “Mahogany Homes Deep-Dive & The Maxed POH” (click to expand)

Mahogany Homes: The Cheapest Path to 99

Mahogany Homes is a construction minigame where you repair furniture in NPC houses across Falador, Varrock, Ardougne, and Hosidius. Each contract awards Construction XP plus Carpenter points, which can be exchanged for the Carpenter’s outfit (2.5% XP boost), a plank sack (holds 28 planks, improving efficiency), and supply crates.

    The numbers:

Contract TierLevel Req.XP/hr (No Plank Sack)XP/hr (With Plank Sack)GP/XPCost to 99 from Unlock
    Beginner135k–50k50k–70k~3.0~39M GP
    Novice2080k–95k110k–140k~3.4~39M GP
    Adept50130k–150k155k–200k~3.4~35M GP
    Expert70185k–210k240k–280k~6.1~80M GP

Adept contracts are the sweet spot: ~155k-200k XP per hour with a plank sack, costing only 3.4 GP per XP — meaning 99 Construction costs roughly 35 million GP. That is 80% cheaper than gnome benches. The trade-off is time: roughly 65 hours versus 13. For ironmen who cannot buy planks from the GE, Mahogany Homes is even more attractive because each plank yields more XP than it would in a POH — stretching your limited supply further.

To optimize Mahogany Homes: wear full Graceful for run energy, obtain a plank sack as your first points purchase, and unlock the NPC Contact spell (Lunar spellbook, 67 Magic) to receive new contracts without returning to Amy in Falador. Use teleports to all four cities — Falador, Varrock, Ardougne, and Hosidius (Xeric’s Talisman) — to minimize travel time. The homeowner offers a cup of tea after each contract that fully restores run energy, which means you only need stamina potions for the longest runs.

The Maxed Player-Owned House: What to Build at 84 Construction

Level 84 is the magic number. With a crystal saw (+3 invisible boost, from The Eyes of Glouphrie quest) and a spicy stew (up to +5 boost, from freeing Evil Dave in Recipe for Disaster), you can reach an effective Construction level of 92 — enough to build every useful item in your house. Spicy stews are annoying to obtain (randomized spice doses from rat-catching), but you only need the boost once per building session.

Here is what a maxed POH should contain:

    RoomKey ItemsLevel (Unboosted)What It Does
Achievement GalleryOrnate Rejuvenation Pool90Restores HP, prayer, run energy, spec attack, and all stats in one click. The single best item in your house.
Achievement GalleryOrnate Jewellery Box91Unlimited teleports: GE, Edgeville, Draynor, Castle Wars, Ferox, Burthrope, Barbarian Outpost, Fishing Guild, and more. No charges, no degradation.

Combat RoomCombat Dummy / Undead Dummy48/53Build Ancient Mace spec before combat. Useful for certain PvM setups.
Costume RoomMagic Wardrobe, Armour Case, etc.VariousStore clue scroll rewards, random event outfits, and treasure trail items — freeing dozens of bank slots.
StudyLectern (Eagle/Demon)47/67Make teleport tablets. Useful for ironmen and for creating house tabs.
KitchenLarder, Range, ShelvesVariousUnlimited tea (+3 boosted stats). Convenient for pre-potting before PvM.
WorkshopTool Store 555Contains every basic tool: hammer, saw, chisel, shears, knife, spade, tinderbox, needle, thread, glassblowing pipe. Never bank for a quest tool again.
Portal ChamberScrying Pool + Direct PortalsVariousScry the destination before teleporting. Useful for checking Wilderness locations before arriving.

The room layout matters for efficiency. Place your Superior Garden with the pool and jewellery box directly adjacent to your entrance portal — ideally, both should be reachable within 1-2 tiles of where you spawn. The ornate pool should be the closest clickable object to your spawn point. Load the portal nexus with the teleports you use most: house (for a house tab), any PvM hubs (Lunar Isle for Vorkath, Weiss for herb runs), and spellbook-swapped destinations (Trollheim teleport for GWD on Standard spellbook).

📖 “Ironman Construction & 87 for Sailing” (click to expand)

Ironman Construction: Where the Planks Come From

Ironmen cannot buy planks from the Grand Exchange, which changes the entire Construction calculus. The meta revolves around Managing Miscellania: allocate workers to teak or mahogany logs, collect them weekly, and convert them to planks at a sawmill or through your butler.

The fastest plank-making method for ironmen: teleport to your house, ask your butler to convert logs to planks, and repeat. The butler automatically banks the finished planks, and the process is fast enough that you can convert several hundred logs per hour. The demon butler is faster than the human butler for this purpose.

    Other plank sources:

    • Varlamore sawmill: New with Varlamore, this sawmill has quick bank access and is closer than the standard sawmill. Reduces travel time per inventory.
    • Plank sack and log bag: Both items increase the number of planks you can carry per trip — the plank sack holds 28 planks, stacking with your inventory.
    • Sawmill vouchers from Sailing salvaging: Shipwreck salvaging occasionally drops vouchers that reduce the GP cost of making planks at a sawmill — a direct discount for ironmen.
    • PvM drops: Zulrah, Callisto, and Chambers of Xeric all drop planks in substantial quantities. Late-game PvM will passively supply a significant portion of your 99 Construction planks.

For low-level ironmen: regular planks spawn on the ground behind Barbarian Assault, and Tempoross drops planks in its reward pool. Both are viable for the first 30 to 40 levels.

Most ironmen train Construction through a mix of Mahogany Homes (for efficiency per plank), mounted mythical capes (for speed when teak planks are abundant), and traditional POH methods when mahogany planks accumulate from PvM. The WiseOldMan ironman EHP track assumes ~53.88 hours for 101k to 13.03M XP using a combination of mounted mythical capes, Mahogany Homes, and some bench/table training — with planks supplied from Managing Miscellania.

87 Construction for Sailing: The New Requirement

Before Sailing, most players stopped at 84 Construction. That gave you a maxed POH, and 99 was a luxury for the skillcape teleport and the satisfaction of a trimmed total level.

Sailing changed that. To build the rosewood hull — the highest-tier ship upgrade in the game, used for both skiffs and sloops — you need 87 Construction. The shipwright NPC can build core parts up to mahogany/mithril tier, but camphor (66), ironwood (77), and rosewood (87) hull parts must be built by the player. This requirement cannot be boosted — unlike POH items, you cannot use a crystal saw or spicy stew on a shipwright’s workbench.

A rosewood sloop hull consumes roughly 80 rosewood hull parts (400 rosewood planks total) and costs over 11 million GP in materials. A rosewood skiff hull uses fewer parts but still costs over 5 million GP. These are one-off expenses for a permanent upgrade — but they mean that serious Sailors cannot stop at 84 Construction. The journey from 84 to 87 costs roughly 12 to 15 million GP with mahogany planks and takes under an hour with gnome benches. For anyone who plans to engage with endgame Sailing, it is a mandatory detour.

Grind It or Buy It: The Real Cost of 99 Construction

Construction is unique among OSRS skills because the grind itself is almost incidental — the real question is how you get the GP. Training Construction takes 13 to 65 hours depending on your method. Earning the GP for 190 million in mahogany planks takes significantly longer unless you already have an established money-maker.

    Here is the math:

How You Fund 99 ConstructionGP/hr SourceHours to Earn ~190M GPPlus Hours to Train (Gnome Benches)Total Time
    Slayer (average, pre-bosses)~500k–1M190–380 hrs13 hrs203–393 hrs
    Slayer bossing (Hydra, Cerb)~2M–4.5M42–95 hrs13 hrs55–108 hrs
Herb runs + birdhouses~1.9M (effective)~100 hrs (but spread over weeks of passive runs)13 hrs~113 hrs (active)
    Buy OSRS gold (10M)N/A0 hrs13 hrs~13 hrs + ~$57–$95
    Buy a maxed Construction accountN/A0 hrs0 hrs~$100–$200

At the U.S. federal minimum wage, 100 hours of your time is worth roughly $725 before taxes. A maxed Construction account — or the gold to fund 99 Construction yourself — costs a fraction of that. For a player who works full-time and plays OSRS to raid and boss, grinding 190 million GP for planks is one of the least time-efficient decisions in the game. For a player who enjoys the progression — building their bank, earning every upgrade — the grind is part of the satisfaction.

There is no wrong answer. But before you spend 55 to 400 hours grinding GP for planks, you should know what those hours are worth.

📖 “How to Buy OSRS Gold & Accounts Safely” (click to expand)

How to Buy OSRS Gold and Accounts Safely

If you decide the GP grind is not worth your time, here is how to buy without becoming a cautionary tale:

    1. Only Use Escrow-Protected Marketplaces

Never send money directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until you confirm you have received the gold. If the seller disappears, you dispute and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse. For accounts, escrow protection means the funds are not released until you confirm control of the registered email — the single most important security step.

    2. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

The Jagex account system makes the registered email the single point of control. If a seller cannot or will not transfer it, walk away. After purchase: change the email, change the password, remove all old recovery information, enable 2FA, unlink third-party accounts (Google, Steam, Apple), and set a bank PIN — all within 10 minutes of receiving the credentials.

    3. For Gold: Face-to-Face Trading Only

Reputable sellers trade gold directly in-game, face-to-face, at the Grand Exchange. Avoid Wilderness drops, Party Room transfers, or any unverifiable method. Verify the seller has a track record — verified badges, recent positive reviews, and detailed listing descriptions on their PlayerBay profile.

Browse Construction-trained OSRS accounts: OSRS Accounts Marketplace on PlayerBay

~12.8 efficient hours (WiseOldMan EHP: gnome benches at 1,050,000 XP/hr). Realistically, most players sustain 900k to 1,000k XP/hr during focused sessions, taking 13 to 15 hours. Construction is the fastest buyable 99 in OSRS — faster than Cooking (~4.8 hrs with 1-tick karambwans), Prayer (~6.6 hrs), or Fletching (~0 hrs, but only because it is trained passively).

At current plank prices (July 2026: oak ~462 GP, teak ~829 GP, mahogany ~2,089 GP): gnome benches cost ~171 million GP in planks plus ~4.3M in servant fees for the 77-99 stretch. The full 52-99 mahogany path (tables then benches) costs ~191 million GP. Mounted mythical capes cost ~98 million GP. Mahogany Homes (Adept) costs ~35 million GP — the cheapest path to 99.

84 Construction is the standard target. With a crystal saw (+3 invisible boost, from The Eyes of Glouphrie quest) and a spicy stew (up to +5 boost, from freeing Evil Dave in RFD), you reach effective level 92 — enough for the ornate pool (90), ornate jewellery box (91), occult altar (90), and crystalline portal nexus (92). For the rosewood hull in Sailing, however, you need 87 Construction — and this cannot be boosted.

Gnome benches (mahogany benches in a Superior Garden) from level 77 to 99, peaking at ~1,100,000 XP per hour with tick-perfect execution. Before 77, mahogany tables in a Dining Room peak at ~900,000 XP per hour from level 52. Both require a demon butler and the RuneLite Menu Entry Swapper plugin.

Mounted mythical capes (level 50, requires DS2). They use teak planks and a mythical cape that is returned when you remove the furniture, achieving ~430,000 XP per hour at roughly 7.6 GP per XP — roughly half the cost per XP of mahogany methods. Requires completion of Dragon Slayer II, which is a significant quest requirement.

If you care about speed: no. Mahogany Homes takes 47 to 65 hours versus 13 to 15 hours for mahogany methods. If you care about cost: absolutely. At ~35 million GP for Adept contracts, it is 80% cheaper than gnome benches. Most mains are better off earning GP through Slayer or bossing and spending it on faster methods — the 50+ hours saved by using gnome benches can be used to earn far more GP than the 135 million GP price difference. For ironmen, Mahogany Homes is excellent because each plank yields more XP — stretching a limited supply further.

For all mahogany methods (tables and gnome benches): yes. The human butler cannot keep up with the plank consumption rate. The demon butler costs roughly 10,000 GP every 8 bank trips, adding 4 to 5 million GP to your total, but the alternative is spending extra seconds waiting for planks on every single inventory — which adds hours to the grind. For mounted mythical capes, a human butler is actually preferable — the demon butler returns too quickly and you will not have used the previous batch yet.

Sailing repair kits at a shipwright’s workbench provide ~250,000 XP per hour at mahogany tier with 28-second AFK intervals — the longest AFK in Construction by far. Cost is similar to traditional POH methods (~10.2 GP/XP), but the total time to 99 stretches to ~45 hours — roughly 3.5× longer than gnome benches. Best for players who want to train Construction while working, studying, or playing another account. Hull parts are faster but become prohibitively expensive at high tiers.

Up to 87 Construction for the rosewood hull — the highest-tier ship upgrade. Intermediate tiers: camphor hull at 66, ironwood hull at 77. These requirements cannot be boosted with crystal saw or spicy stew — you must have the actual Construction level. For anyone planning to engage with endgame Sailing, 87 Construction is no longer optional.

Gold buying carries inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service. The safest approach: use a marketplace with escrow protection (like PlayerBay), choose verified sellers with positive reviews, and only accept face-to-face in-game trades at safe locations like the Grand Exchange. Avoid direct payments to sellers (Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, crypto) — escrow means your payment is held until you confirm delivery.

    The Bottom Line

Construction is the most lopsided skill in OSRS. It takes under 13 hours to max at peak efficiency — faster than almost any other 99 — and costs 190 million GP, making it one of the three most expensive buyable skills alongside Prayer and Herblore. The entire skill is a GP-for-time equation: every extra million GP you spend shaves minutes off the grind.

The meta is clear. If you can afford mahogany planks and a demon butler, gnome benches from 77 to 99 are unmatched. If you have completed Dragon Slayer II, mounted mythical capes give you 99 for nearly half the cost. If you are on a budget, Mahogany Homes delivers 99 for 35 million GP — but at the cost of 50+ extra hours. And if you want to train Construction while barely touching the game, the Sailing workbench with repair kits is the first genuinely AFK option the skill has ever had.

The newly added 87 Construction requirement for a maxed Sailing boat means that stopping at 84 may no longer be optimal. Those three extra levels — roughly 12 to 15 million GP and under an hour of gnome benches — unlock the best ship in the game. For a skill that already gives you the best quality-of-life hub in any MMO, this is one more reason to push past the old standard.

And if 190 million GP sounds like more grinding than you signed up for, the marketplace makes the math simple. At minimum wage, the time it takes to earn 190 million GP at most mid-level money-makers is worth far more than the cost of buying the gold — or the account — outright. Whether that trade-off makes sense for you depends entirely on what your time is worth.

OSRS 1-99 Slayer Guide | Fastest XP, Best Tasks, Block Lists & Profit

Slayer is the slowest 99 in Old School RuneScape. That is not an opinion — it is the math. At maximum efficiency, using cannon on every task, barraging every stackable monster in the Catacombs of Kourend, and skipping every slow assignment without hesitation, Slayer takes approximately 166.5 efficient hours from level 1 to 99. For a normal player using good but not world-record methods, expect 160 to 220 hours. For an AFK player who takes whatever task they are given, 260 to 430 hours.

But Slayer is also the most important skill in the game for an account you plan to max. It passively trains Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, and Hitpoints while you do it. It unlocks the best money-makers in the game — Hydra, Cerberus, Kraken — that fund every other buyable skill. And it gates some of the most important content in OSRS, from the Quest Cape (69 Slayer for Monkey Madness 2) to the Achievement Diary Cape (95 Slayer).

This guide covers everything: which Slayer master to use at every stage, the exact unlock order for your points, gear progression from a dragon scimitar to a Scythe of Vitur, block and skip lists for every training style, the Slayer bosses worth farming, and — if you decide 166 hours of task RNG is not how you want to spend your limited game time — how to skip the grind safely.

Slayer is a task-based skill. You visit a Slayer master, they assign you a monster and a quantity to kill, and you earn Slayer XP equal to the monster’s total Hitpoints for each kill. When the task is complete, you return for a new assignment — and, critically, you receive Slayer points that you spend on permanent unlocks.

The core loop is simple, but the strategy around it is not. Your choice of Slayer master, your block list (tasks you permanently remove), your skip habits (tasks you pay points to bypass), and your use of bracelets (expeditious to shorten bad tasks, slaughter to extend good ones) collectively determine whether you are earning 40k XP per hour or 100k+.

A few critical mechanics to know upfront:

    • You do not earn Slayer points for your first four tasks. Your fifth task and every task after pays points. Milestone tasks (10th, 50th, 100th, 250th, 1,000th) multiply your base points by 5×, 15×, 25×, 35×, and 50× respectively.
    • Turael can reset your task. If you are stuck on a task you cannot complete and lack the points to skip, Turael in Burthorpe gives you a replacement — but this resets your entire task streak, zeroing your progress toward the next milestone bonus. Avoid this unless absolutely necessary.
    • Krystilia runs a separate streak. The Wilderness Slayer master uses her own counter, independent of the standard masters. You cannot carry a regular task and a Wilderness task simultaneously.
    • Starting Slayer before 70+ combat is slow. Low-level masters assign low-HP monsters, which generate low Slayer XP per kill. Most players should train combat through quests (Waterfall, Fight Arena, Monkey Madness) until at least 70 combat before starting Slayer seriously.

The Slayer Masters: Who to Use at Every Stage

There are nine Slayer masters, and choosing the wrong one is the single biggest XP leak most new players create for themselves. Here is every master, their requirements, and when (if ever) you should use them:

    MasterCombat Req.Slayer Req.Base Pts/TaskBlock CostBest For
Turael / SpriaNoneNone040Resetting bad tasks; point boosting (9 Turael → 1 Konar every 10th). Never use for XP.
Mazchna20None650Brief early-game introduction to Slayer. Outgrown quickly.
Vannaka40None860Mid-level filler before 70 combat. Decent if Chaeldar is unavailable.
Chaeldar70None1070First viable master for XP. Use from 70 combat until 75 (Konar) or 85 (Nieve).
Konar quo Maten75None18 (20 w/ Elite Kourend Diary)80Best for GP via Brimstone keys (~100k avg per key). Location-locked tasks can be slow. Also the only master who assigns Hydras.
Nieve / Steve85None12 (15 w/ Elite Western Diary)90Best for convenience — located next to the Stronghold Slayer Cave. Nearly identical to Duradel in task quality. Use from 85-99 combat if you do not have 50 Slayer yet.
Duradel1005015100The endgame XP master. Longest tasks, highest-HP monsters, most boss variants. This is where you park for 99.
KrystiliaNone2+25100Wilderness-only. Most points per task in the game. Separate streak counter. PK risk applies.

The progression path is straightforward: quest your combat to 70+ → use Chaeldar at 70 combat → switch to Nieve/Steve at 85 combat → switch to Duradel at 100 combat with 50 Slayer and stay there. Some players prefer Konar for the Brimstone key income, especially in the mid-game when GP is tight, but her location-locked tasks average slower XP than Nieve or Duradel.

📖 “Slayer Points & Unlock Priority” (click to expand)

Slayer Points: What to Unlock and In What Order

Slayer points are your most important resource during the 1-99 grind. Spending them in the wrong order means doing hundreds of tasks without key unlocks — and earning points slower on every task because you lack the upgrades that would have accelerated them.

Here is the optimal unlock order for most players:

    Phase 1: The Non-Negotiables (First ~500 Points)

    OrderUnlockCostWhy
1Bigger and Badder150 pts (proposed reduction incoming)Unlocks Superior Slayer monsters — bigger, tougher versions of regular monsters that appear randomly on-task. They drop significantly more XP and have unique drop tables worth millions. This increases your average Slayer XP rate from the moment it is unlocked. Note: Jagex has proposed reducing this cost, so waiting for the update may save points.
2Slayer Helmet400 pts + 55 Crafting + Black maskCombines the black mask (16.67% melee damage/accuracy boost on-task) with the face mask, nose peg, earmuffs, and spiny helmet — letting you use the black mask boost on tasks that require protective headgear. Imbue it at Nightmare Zone or the PvP Arena to extend the boost to Magic and Ranged. This is the single most important gear item in Slayer.
3First blocks and extends100 pts/block, 30 pts/extendStart blocking the worst common tasks for your master (see block list section below) and extending the best ones.

Phase 2: Quality of Life (Next ~1,000 Points)

    OrderUnlockCostWhy
4Slayer Ring Crafting300 pts + 75 CraftingSlayer rings teleport you to the Stronghold Slayer Cave, Tarn’s Lair, the Slayer Tower, and the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon. Saves hours of travel time across the entire grind.
5Hot Stuff100 ptsUnlocks TzHaar tasks. Lets you get a TzHaar assignment before attempting the Fight Caves, giving you the slayer helmet boost against Jad — a massive help for first-time Fire Cape attempts.
6Like a Boss200 ptsUnlocks boss variants of Slayer tasks. If you plan to do boss Slayer with Duradel, this is essential. If you are purely chasing XP, skip it.
7I Wildy More Slayer0 pts (free)Adds more high-XP tasks to Krystilia’s pool. Only relevant if you plan to do Wilderness Slayer.
8Task Storage1,000 pts (proposed: 500)Lets you store a task for later and get a new one — an alternative to skipping. Useful for preserving a good task when you need to take a break from Slayer.

After Phase 2, pour every remaining point into filling your block list, extending your best XP or profit tasks, and skipping anything that survives your blocks. Cosmetic recolours for the slayer helmet should wait until your block list is fully optimized and you have nothing else to spend points on.

📖 “Gear Progression & Useful Unlocks” (click to expand)

Gear Progression: What You Need at Every Stage

Slayer uses every combat style depending on the task, but most of your kills will be melee. Here is what to aim for at each stage of account progression:

    Early Slayer (~70–85 Combat)

    SlotItemNotes
HelmBlack Mask → Slayer Helmet (i)+16.67% damage and accuracy on-task. Imbue as soon as possible for Magic and Ranged coverage.
WeaponDragon Scimitar → Abyssal Whip (70 Attack)D Scim from Monkey Madness 1. Whip at 70 Attack (~1.5M GP from GE).
ShieldDragon DefenderObtained at the Warriors’ Guild. +6 Strength bonus. Free upgrade.
BodyFighter Torso → Obsidian PlatebodyFighter torso from Barbarian Assault is free and gives +4 Strength. Obsidian is a small upgrade.
LegsObsidian Platelegs → Blood Moon TassetsPrioritize Strength bonus over defence for Slayer.
AmuletAmulet of Fury → Amulet of TortureFury for balanced stats (~1.3M GP). Torture for pure melee DPS when budget allows.
CapeFire CapeObtained from the Fight Caves. +4 Strength bonus. A rite of passage.
BootsDragon Boots+4 Strength. ~120k GP. Best value boots in the game.
RingBerserker Ring (i)+8 Strength. Imbued at Nightmare Zone. ~2.2M GP total.

    Mid Slayer (~85–95 Combat)

    SlotItemNotes
Weapon (general)Abyssal Whip / Osmumten’s FangFang for high-defence monsters (dragons, boss variants). Whip for everything else.
Weapon (bursting)Ancient Staff → Ancient SceptreFor Dust Devils, Nechryael, and Smoke Devils. Ancient Sceptre from Muspah is the upgrade.
Body/LegsBandos Chestplate & Tassets+4 Strength each. The classic mid-game melee upgrade. ~35M GP for the set.
GlovesBarrows GlovesBest all-around gloves. If you do not have them, stop Slayer and finish Recipe for Disaster.
AmuletAmulet of Torture+10 Strength. ~9M GP. Worth it for the DPS increase on every single task.

    Endgame Slayer (95+ Combat, Duradel)

    SlotItemNotes
Weapon (general)Rapier / Saeldor / Inq. Mace → Scythe of ViturRapier/Saeldor/Mace for low-defence monsters. Scythe for large monsters and boss tasks. Scythe is expensive to use (~1M+ GP/hr in charges) but unmatched DPS.
Weapon (bursting)Kodai WandUnlimited water runes. 15% magic damage. Best-in-slot for barraging tasks.
Magic armour (bursting)Ancestral / VirtusMax magic damage for faster barraging kills. Ahrim’s is the budget alternative.
Melee armourTorva / OathplateBest-in-slot Strength bonus. Torva is expensive (~1B+ for the set). Oathplate is the competitive mid-range option.
Prayer armourSunfire Fanatic ArmourMassive prayer bonus. Extends Protect from Melee to nearly 10 minutes. Ideal for AFK Slayer with prayer regeneration potions.

    Essential Utility Items (All Stages)

    • Dwarf Multicannon: Unlocked after the Dwarf Cannon quest. Deployable on multi-combat tasks (Dagannoths, Kalphites, Suqahs, Smoke Devils). Doubles XP rates on cannon-friendly tasks. Costs ~200k-300k GP/hr in cannonballs — expensive but essential for efficient XP.
    • Expeditious Bracelet: 25% chance per kill to count as 2 kills toward your task. Use on slow, low-XP tasks you want to end faster.
    • Bracelet of Slaughter: 25% chance per kill to not count toward your task. Use on fast, high-XP tasks you want to extend. Swap to it before each kill ends.
    • Ancient Magicks (Desert Treasure 1): Burst and barrage spells are the single largest XP boost in Slayer. Without them, Dust Devils, Nechryaels, and Smoke Devils are mediocre tasks. With them, they are the best XP in the skill.
    • Goading Potions: A recent addition that makes all monsters within range aggressive for 6 minutes. Expensive (~30k-50k per dose) but transforms AFK Slayer — no more waiting for aggression timers or running in circles to re-aggro. Best used on tasks where the monster density is high and the area is multi-combat.
    • Gem Bag / Herb Sack / Seed Box: Save 3+ inventory slots on tasks that drop gems, herbs, or seeds. Buy from the Slayer reward shop or obtain through relevant minigames.
    • NPC Contact Spell (67 Magic, Lunar Diplomacy): Lets you get new Slayer tasks without visiting the master. Saves minutes per task over hundreds of tasks.

Slayer Training Styles: Pick Your Path

Slayer can be trained four fundamentally different ways. You cannot optimize for all four simultaneously — each style demands a different master, block list, bracelet strategy, and gear setup. Pick one and commit.

Style 1: Fastest XP (Cannon + Barrage Meta)

This is what most players aim for. The principle is simple: cannon every task that allows it, barrage every task that stacks, skip everything that cannot be cannoned or barraged, and extend the tasks with the highest XP rates.

Master: Duradel (best) or Nieve/Steve (if below 50 Slayer)

    Strategy:

    • Slaughter bracelet on burst/cannon tasks (Dust Devils, Nechryaels, Smoke Devils, Dagannoths, Kalphites, Suqahs)
    • Expeditious bracelet on slow tasks you cannot skip
    • Skip anything that survives your block list
    • Cannon in multi-combat; barrage in Catacombs of Kourend
    • Use super combat potions + Piety on melee tasks

Example Duradel Block List (Fast XP):

    BlockReason
HellhoundsHigh weight (8), no cannon, mediocre XP, no profit. Unless you do Cerberus (91+ Slayer), this is a permanent block.
Black DemonsHigh weight (8), slow melee kills. Demonic Gorillas are profitable but significantly slower XP than burst tasks.
Greater DemonsHigh weight (9), poor XP, poor drops. Only unblock if you plan to do Zamorak GWD on-task.
Fire GiantsHigh weight (8), slow XP. Cannon in Catacombs helps but they are still weaker than barrage tasks.
Spiritual CreaturesSlow, annoying to access, poor XP and drops.
Drakes / WyrmsSlow kills, poor XP, unremarkable profit. High annoyance factor.

Key XP tasks to extend: Dust Devils (burst, 70k-90k XP/hr), Nechryaels (burst, 70k-85k XP/hr), Smoke Devils (barrage, up to 150k XP/hr), Dagannoths (cannon, 45k-60k XP/hr), Kalphites (cannon, fast tasks).

Expected XP rate: 80k-100k Slayer XP/hr over the long term, averaging good and bad tasks. At this rate, 130 to 163 hours from level 1 to 99 — but realistically closer to 160 to 200 hours with task RNG and banking.

The secret fast-XP tech: Wilderness Slayer Cave. The cave is both multi-combat and cannonable. Combining a cannon with barrage spells on Hellhounds, Greater Demons, or Dark Warriors in the cave can push past 100k Slayer XP/hr — the absolute highest rates in the game. The trade-off is PK risk and a Wilderness-only task streak. For players willing to risk budget gear, this is the fastest Slayer XP available.

Style 2: Maximum Profit (Boss Slayer + Konar)

If GP is your priority — funding gear upgrades, Construction, Prayer, or just building a bank — boss Slayer with Duradel (or Konar for passive Brimstone keys) is the play.

Master: Duradel (with “Like a Boss” unlocked) for boss variants; Konar for Brimstone keys (average ~100k GP per key) on non-boss tasks

The Slayer bosses, ranked by profit:

    BossSlayer Req.TaskGP/hr (Avg)Key DropsDifficulty
Alchemical Hydra95Hydras~3-4.5MHydra’s Claw (~60M+), Hydra Leather, Brimstone Ring piecesMedium — learnable mechanics, consistent money
Cerberus91Hellhounds~2-3MPrimordial Crystal (~19.8M), Pegasian Crystal, Eternal Crystal, Smouldering StoneMedium-High — prayer-intensive, ghost mechanic
Kraken87Cave Krakens~1.5-2.15MTrident of the Seas, Kraken Tentacle, Jar of DirtVery Low — near-AFK, the easiest Slayer boss
Thermonuclear Smoke Devil93Smoke Devils~800k-1.2MOccult Necklace, Smoke BattlestaffLow — simple fight, lower profit than alternatives
Grotesque Guardians75Gargoyles~600k-1MGranite Dust, Granite Gloves, Core itemsLow-Medium — accessible mid-level boss
Abyssal Sire85Abyssal Demons~800k-1.5MAbyssal Dagger, Abyssal Orphan pet, UnsiredMedium — multi-phase fight, can be tedious

Boss Slayer is slower XP than pure cannon/barrage, but the GP difference is enormous. A single Hydra’s Claw drop (~60M+ GP) funds multiple gear upgrades. Over the journey to 99 Slayer, a boss-focused player can easily earn 500 million to 1 billion+ GP — enough to max every buyable skill with money left over.

📖 “AFK Slayer & Wilderness Point Farming” (click to expand)

    Style 3: AFK Slayer

AFK Slayer sacrifices XP rates for attention. You take tasks that can be completed with minimal input — aggressive monsters, prayer-protected setups, cannon tasks — and you do them while working, studying, or playing another account.

    Master: Nieve or Duradel

    How to maximize AFK time:

    • Goading potions make all monsters aggressive for 6 minutes — no more running around to reset aggression timers. Expensive but transformative for AFK play.
    • Prayer regeneration potions + Sunfire Fanatic Armour let Protect from Melee last 8 to 10 minutes without sipping a prayer potion. Combine with a bonecrusher necklace for near-infinite prayer on bone-dropping tasks.
    • Cannon with Combat Achievement ammo upgrades — the medium Combat Achievement reward lets you load more cannonballs, extending the time before you need to refill.
    • Prayer gear (Proselyte → Sunfire Fanatic) — maximizes prayer bonus so protection prayers drain as slowly as possible.

Best AFK tasks: Gargoyles (auto-smash with slayer helmet), Kurasks, Bloodvelds (prayer melee, 10-min AFK with goading potions), Abyssal Demons (prayer melee, 5-10 min intervals), Kraken (near-AFK boss, click pool every minute).

Expected XP rate: 30k-50k Slayer XP/hr. At this rate, 260 to 430 hours to 99 — but during those hours, you are also getting work done, watching content, or playing another account. For many players, the slower rate is worth the freed attention.

Style 4: Maximum Slayer Points (Wilderness + Turael Boosting)

If you need Slayer points fast — to fill your block list, unlock the slayer helmet, or extend tasks — point farming is its own meta.

    Option A: Wilderness Slayer (Krystilia)

Krystilia pays 25 points per task — the highest base rate in the game. Her streak bonuses scale to 1,250 points on the 1,000th task. Wear an expeditious bracelet on every task to speed them up, bring only 3 valuable items (slayer helmet + weapon + one other), turn on PK skull prevention, and accept that you will occasionally die to a pker. The points-per-hour is unmatched.

    Option B: Turael Boosting

The safer method: do 9 fast tasks from Turael (0 points each, but they advance your streak), then do the 10th task from Konar or Duradel for the milestone multiplier. At the 50th-task milestone, that 10th task pays 15× the base points — 270 points from Konar or 225 from Duradel. Use expeditious bracelets on all Turael tasks and the non-milestone Konar tasks. This method earns almost no Slayer XP, so treat it as a dedicated points grind — not something you mix with training.

The Proposed Slayer Updates: What Is Changing

Jagex has proposed a range of Slayer improvements that will meaningfully change the meta when they go live. Here is what is on the table:

    • Separate block lists for every Slayer master. This is the biggest change. Right now, your block list is shared across all masters — a task you block for Duradel is also blocked for Konar, even though Konar might assign it in a profitable location. After the update, you can customize a block list for each master: a pure-XP list for Duradel, a profit-focused list for Konar, and a speed list for Krystilia.
    • Reduced Slayer point costs for lower-level masters. Blocking a task with Mazchna will cost fewer points than blocking with Duradel. This makes low-level Slayer more viable as a points-farming method.
    • Bigger and Badder cost reduction. The Superior Slayer unlock is proposed to cost fewer than the current 150 points, making it accessible earlier.
    • Task storage cost reduction. Dropping from 1,000 points to 500 points, making it a realistic mid-game unlock rather than an endgame luxury.
    • Slug Salter and Reptile Freezer more accessible. Both proposed to cost fewer points, giving lower-level players earlier access to slayer-only items.
    • Custodia Pass Slayer Dungeon (already live, Varlamore Part 3). Three tiers of Custodian Stalkers starting at 54 Slayer, dropping the Antler Guard — a prayer and offensive-boosting offhand. A solid mid-game slayer location that did not exist before late 2025.

None of these changes are live as of July 2026. The meta advice in this guide reflects the current live game. When the separate-blocklist update launches, expect every Slayer guide — including this one — to need a significant revision.

📖 “Slayer Tips & Tricks + Ironman Notes” (click to expand)

    Slayer Tips and Tricks

    • Do your first 4 tasks with Turael. These award 0 points regardless of master, so burn through them on the fastest, easiest tasks available. Start your streak with task 5 on your real master.
    • Use NPC Contact (Lunar spellbook, 67 Magic). No more running back to Shilo Village to get a new Duradel task. Cast the spell, get assigned remotely, teleport to the task location. Over 500+ tasks, this saves hours.
    • Safespot with a cannon in single-way combat. In the Stronghold Slayer Cave, you can stand behind a safespot while your cannon attacks everything in multi-combat range. The cannon ignores the single-way restriction — it hits everything, even if you are safespotting one monster with ranged.
    • Use task variants for profit. A Black Demons task can be completed at Demonic Gorillas (profitable, Zenytes) or Skotizo. A Greater Demons task can be done at K’ril Tsutsaroth (Zamorak GWD). A Blue Dragons task can be done at Vorkath. A Hellhounds task can be done at Cerberus. You are not locked into killing the base monster.
    • Reanimate ensouled heads on-task. Ensouled heads dropped by Slayer monsters can be reanimated with the Arceuus spellbook for Prayer XP. Each head counts as one kill toward your task. This lets you train Prayer while doing Slayer — efficient if you are working toward 70+ Prayer.
    • Bring High Alchemy runes. Most mid-to-high-level Slayer tasks drop rune items, battlestaves, and dragonhide that alch for 5k-40k GP each. Alching extends your trips and reduces bank runs. Over a full Slayer grind, alching rather than banking adds tens of millions of GP in convenience profit.
    • Wear protective gear before running through aggressive areas. Running past Aberrant Spectres without a nose peg in the Slayer Tower is a quick way to die. Equip your slayer helmet or relevant protective item before entering aggressive zones.
    • Duo Slayer exists but is niche. You can partner with another player on an enchanted gem or slayer helmet to share a task. It can speed up tasks and provide some point efficiency, but it is not widely used outside of specific point-boosting strategies.

    Ironman Slayer Notes

Ironmen follow the same general progression as mains with a few critical differences:

    • Do not cannon most tasks. Making cannonballs takes hours and is tedious without the double ammo mould from Giants’ Foundry. Cannon sparingly, for tasks where it makes a disproportionate difference (Dagannoths, Smoke Devils).
    • Get the herb sack, gem bag, and seed box early. These drops are essential for Ironman herblore and crafting progression. Without them, you leave valuable supplies on the ground or bank constantly.
    • Wilderness Slayer is dangerous but rewarding. Larran’s keys and Slayer’s Enchantments are valuable, and the point rate is unmatched. But losing your hard-earned gear to a PKer stings worse on an ironman. Budget accordingly.
    • Slayer is your PvM gearing pipeline. The Abyssal Whip (85 Slayer), Trident of the Seas (87 Slayer, from Kraken), Occult Necklace (93 Slayer, from Smoke Devils), and Dragon Hunter Lance (95 Slayer, from Hydra) are all obtained through Slayer. You cannot buy them. This makes Slayer the single most important skill on an ironman account — it literally gates your access to endgame gear.
    • Start Slayer at 70+ combat. Without access to the Grand Exchange for gear upgrades and cannonballs, training Slayer at low combat is inefficient bordering on painful. Quest your melee stats to base 60s-70s first, then begin.

Grind It or Buy It: Slayer’s Real Cost in Time

Slayer is the single longest skill in OSRS — 166.5 efficient hours, and realistically 160 to 220 hours for a focused player using cannon and barrage. For a casual or AFK player, it stretches to 260 to 430 hours. For an ironman, 186 to 261 hours with no cannon and no buying runes from the GE.

To put those numbers in perspective: 200 hours is 25 full eight-hour workdays. It is more time than it takes to watch every episode of The Office — twice. It is a commitment measured in months of regular play, not weeks.

For many players, the Slayer grind is OSRS. It is where you make your money, train your combat stats, unlock your bossing content, and experience the game’s best PvM progression. Skipping Slayer on a main account means skipping the most efficient path to max combat and arguably the most enjoyable skill in the game.

But if you have already done the Slayer grind on another account — or if you want to jump straight into endgame raids without spending 200 hours on task RNG — here is what the marketplace looks like:

What You WantTime Cost (Grinding)Marketplace CostWhat You Get
70 Slayer account40–60 hours$30–$50Access to Kurasks, Dust Devils, and most mid-game Slayer content. Quest cape requirements partially met.
85 Slayer account90–130 hours$60–$120Abyssal Demons, whip drops, Sire access. Major milestone — most players’ first Slayer goal.
95 Slayer account140–200 hours$150–$300Alchemical Hydra unlocked — the best Slayer boss GP in the game. Achievement Diary Cape requirement met.
99 Slayer account160–430 hours$200–$500+Access any Slayer master regardless of combat level. Max cape progress. Never touch Slayer again.
Maxed main account2,000–4,500 hours$300–$1,500+All 24 skills at 99. Slayer done. Endgame ready.

At minimum wage, 200 hours of your time is worth roughly $1,450 before taxes. A 99 Slayer account costs a fraction of that. If your goal is endgame PvM and you have no attachment to the Slayer journey, the marketplace math is straightforward.

That said, Slayer is also one of the few skills where buying the finished product means missing the best part. The Abyssal Whip drop at 85 Slayer. The first Cerberus crystal. The Hydra’s Claw after a 1,000-kill dry streak. Those moments are genuinely memorable in a way that buying a 99 Slayer account is not. For a first-time account, grinding Slayer is usually the right call. For a second account, an alt, or a player who simply values their time over the journey — the marketplace exists for a reason.

📖 “How to Buy OSRS Accounts & Gold Safely” (click to expand)

How to Buy an OSRS Account or Gold Safely

If you decide the Slayer grind is not worth your time, here is how to buy without becoming a cautionary tale:

    1. Only Use Escrow-Protected Marketplaces

Never send money directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until you confirm you have received the account or gold. If the seller disappears, you dispute and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse.

    2. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

The Jagex account system makes the registered email the single point of control. If a seller cannot or will not transfer the email, walk away. After purchase: change the email, change the password, remove all old recovery information, enable 2FA, unlink third-party accounts, and set a bank PIN — in that order, within 10 minutes of receiving the credentials.

    3. For Gold: Face-to-Face Trading Only

Reputable sellers trade gold directly in-game, face-to-face, at the Grand Exchange. Avoid Wilderness drops, Party Room transfers, or any unverifiable method.

    4. Check Seller Reputation

Look for verified badges, multiple completed OSRS sales, recent positive reviews mentioning smooth delivery, and detailed listing descriptions. Sellers who push off-platform deals, refuse to show the account in-game, or have vague one-liner descriptions are red flags.

Browse Slayer-trained OSRS accounts: OSRS Accounts Marketplace on PlayerBay

Browse OSRS gold: OSRS Gold Marketplace on PlayerBay

~166.5 efficient hours (EHP, using cannon + barrage + optimal skips). For a realistic efficient player: 160-220 hours. AFK/casual: 260-430 hours. Ironman (no cannon): 186-261 hours. Slayer is the single slowest 99 in OSRS by efficient hours — it takes longer than Agility (~165 hrs), Mining (~122 hrs), or any other skill.

Duradel (100 combat, 50 Slayer, Shilo Village) gives the longest tasks with the highest-HP monsters — the best XP per task. Nieve/Steve (85 combat, Gnome Stronghold) is nearly identical and accessible earlier. For absolute maximum XP rates, Krystilia (Wilderness) with cannon + barrage in the Wilderness Slayer Cave can push past 100k XP/hr, but carries PK risk.

Duradel with “Like a Boss” unlocked for boss tasks (Hydra at 95, Cerberus at 91, Kraken at 87). Konar for Brimstone keys (~100k GP average per key) on non-boss tasks. A boss-focused Slayer player can earn 500M-1B+ GP on the road to 99.

Bigger and Badder (Superior monsters) → Slayer Helmet → Blocks and Extends → Slayer Ring crafting → Hot Stuff → Like a Boss (if bossing) → Task Storage. Cosmetic recolours come dead last.

For maximum XP rates, yes. The dwarf multicannon doubles or triples your DPS on cannon-friendly tasks (Dagannoths, Kalphites, Suqahs, Smoke Devils). It costs ~200k-300k GP/hr in cannonballs. If you cannot afford the upkeep, you can still train Slayer — just accept that your XP rates will be 30-50% lower. Many ironmen skip the cannon entirely and still reach 99, just with 186-261 hours instead of 130-163.

If you are below 91 Slayer and pure-XP focused: yes, block them. Hellhounds have a high task weight (8 with Duradel), cannot be cannoned in most locations, give mediocre XP, and drop almost nothing. If you are 91+ Slayer and want to kill Cerberus for Primordial/ Pegasian/Eternal crystals: keep them and extend the task. Cerberus is 2-3M GP/hr when crystals are factored into the long-term average.

At least 70 combat for Chaeldar, ideally 85 for Nieve, optimally 100 combat with 50 Slayer for Duradel. Training Slayer before 70 combat is extremely slow — low-level masters assign low-HP monsters, producing very little Slayer XP per kill. Use quests (Waterfall, Fight Arena, The Grand Tree, Monkey Madness 1) to boost your combat stats to base 60s-70s before taking your first Slayer task.

Smoke Devils (93 Slayer) barraged in the Smoke Devil Dungeon produce up to ~150,000 Slayer XP per hour — the highest rate in the game. Nechryaels (80 Slayer) and Dust Devils (65 Slayer) bursted in the Catacombs of Kourend produce 70k-90k XP/hr. All three require Ancient Magicks (Desert Treasure 1) and a substantial rune budget.

Account purchases carry inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service. The safest approach: buy from a marketplace with escrow protection (like PlayerBay), ensure the seller transfers the registered email (Jagex account system), immediately secure the account (change email, password, remove recovery info, enable 2FA, set bank PIN), and choose sellers with verified status and positive reviews. Never complete a deal off-platform where escrow protections do not apply.

    The Bottom Line

Slayer is the skill that defines an OSRS account. It is the slowest 99 — 166.5 efficient hours that stretch to 200+ for a realistic player and 400+ for anyone who values their sanity over their XP rates. It is also the skill that trains your combat stats, funds your buyables, unlocks your bosses, and gates your quest and diary capes. You cannot meaningfully avoid it. The only question is how you approach it.

The efficient path is clear: quest your combat to 70+, start with Chaeldar, switch to Nieve at 85 combat, switch to Duradel at 100 combat with 50 Slayer, cannon everything you can, barrage everything that stacks, block the slow tasks, extend the fast ones, and let the XP accumulate while your bank value climbs. Boss on-task when you hit the level requirements — Hydra at 95, Cerberus at 91, Kraken at 87 — and let the unique drops fund your gear upgrades.

The AFK path is just as valid. Goading potions, Sunfire Fanatic armour, and prayer regeneration potions have made AFK Slayer more accessible than ever. Your XP rates will be half of what a cannon-and-barrage player earns, but your attention will be free for everything else in your life — and over 300 to 400 hours, that trade-off is entirely reasonable.

And if 200 hours of RNG task assignments sounds like the opposite of fun, the marketplace exists. A 99 Slayer account costs less than a weekend of minimum-wage work, and it comes with all the combat XP, all the boss unlocks, and none of the “your task is: 187 Hellhounds” disappointment.

There is no wrong answer. Only the question of what your time is worth.

OSRS Barrows Guide : Complete Walkthrough, Profit Breakdown & Best Gear Setups

Barrows is where most OSRS players kill their first real boss. Not a quest boss. Not a slayer monster with extra hitpoints. An actual, honest-to-god boss encounter — six of them, back to back — that drops some of the most iconic armour sets in the game and enough runes to fund your next gear upgrade whether you hit the unique table or not.

It is also, in 2026, one of the most consistent mid-level money-makers in OSRS. With the Morytania Hard Diary completed, Barrows reliably produces 820,000 to 1,600,000 GP per hour depending on your gear and speed. At maximum efficiency — using a Tumeken’s Shadow and near-perfect execution — that number pushes past 2 million GP per hour when unique drops are factored into the long-term average.

This guide covers everything: the requirements you should knock out before your first run, the exact mechanics of every brother, the reward potential system explained in plain English, gear setups from rag to riches, the Combat Achievement tasks worth chasing, and — if you decide grinding Barrows for GP is not how you want to spend your next hundred hours — how to skip the grind safely.

📖 “Requirements & How to Get There” (click to expand)

Requirements & What to Unlock First

    Hard Requirements

    • Priest in Peril — This quest grants access to Morytania, the region where Barrows is located. Without it, you cannot reach the mounds. Non-negotiable.

Soft Requirements (You Will Have a Bad Time Without These)

    • 43 Prayer — Protect from Melee, Protect from Magic, and Protect from Missiles negate almost all damage from the brothers. Running Barrows without protection prayers means eating an inventory of food every run. Technically possible. Miserable in practice.
    • 50+ Magic — Iban’s Blast (requiring Underground Pass) at 50 Magic is the entry point. Higher is better. 75+ Magic for a powered staff like the Trident of the Swamp is a major upgrade.
    • 50+ Ranged or Melee — Ahrim has high Magic defence, so you will need a secondary attack style to kill him efficiently. Ranged (Magic Shortbow or better) is preferred.

Unlock These Before You Start Farming

Two unlocks transform Barrows from “decent” to “excellent.” If you are planning to do more than a handful of runs, prioritize these first:

UnlockWhat It DoesHow to Get ItPriority
Ghommal’s Hilt 2Nullifies the prayer drain effect in the Barrows tunnels — no more face appearing on screen to drain your prayer every 18 secondsClaim medium Combat Achievement rewards (161 total CA points across all bosses)Critical — saves massive prayer potion costs and removes the most annoying mechanic in the minigame
Morytania Hard Diary50% more runes from every Barrows chest. Also gives the Morytania legs 3 teleport (infinite, to Burgh de Rott) and a bonecrusher charge boostComplete all Hard Morytania tasks (requires 70 Prayer, 71 Agility, 70 Smithing, 70 Defence, plus other stats and quests)Critical — adds 130k-180k GP/hr in pure rune profit alone
Morytania Elite DiaryDoubles all rune drops (100% increase vs. base). Morytania legs 4 give unlimited Barrows teleportsComplete all Elite Morytania tasks (high requirements — 96 Fishing, 85 Agility, etc.)High — adds 300k-500k GP/hr at max efficiency, but the stat requirements are steep

The order matters: get your medium Combat Achievements done first (the prayer drain removal makes every run smoother), then work on the Hard Diary (the 50% rune bonus is the single biggest profit upgrade), and treat the Elite Diary as a long-term goal if you plan to farm Barrows extensively.

    How to Get to Barrows

Barrows sits in the swamps of eastern Morytania, east of Mort’ton and west of Meiyerditch. Getting there efficiently matters — every minute spent running is a minute not opening chests.

    MethodRequirementsSpeedCost per UseNotes
Barrows Teleport (tablet)None — buy from GEInstant~2,500-3,500 GPThe best option for most players. Lands you directly at the mounds.
Barrows Teleport (spell)83 Magic, Arceuus favourInstant~1,200 GP in runesCheaper per cast but requires 83 Magic. Use if you have the level.
Morytania Legs 3/4Hard/Elite Morytania Diary~30 sec runFree (unlimited)Teleports to Burgh de Rott. Run east. Free is hard to beat.
Mort’ton Teleport ScrollNone — buy from GE~40 sec run~3,000-5,000 GPSlightly slower than Barrows teleport. Decent backup.
Fairy Ring (BIP)Fairytale II started~60 sec runFreeRun east through the swamp. Budget option.
Shades of Mort’ton Minigame TeleportShades of Mort’ton quest~35 sec runFree (20-min cooldown)Useful as a secondary teleport between minigame cooldown resets.

For efficient farming, use Barrows Teleport tablets to get there and a ring of dueling to bank at Ferox Enclave between runs — the rejuvenation pool restores everything (HP, prayer, run energy, stats) in seconds, and there is a bank chest right next to it. One ring of dueling lasts 8 charges and costs under 1,000 GP, making it the most cost-effective reset method in the game.

The Six Brothers: Mechanics & Optimal Kill Order

Each Barrows brother has a distinct attack style, special ability, and weakness. Knowing these before you dig into the first mound is the difference between a clean run and getting stacked out by Dharok because you did not watch your prayer.

BrotherAttack StylePrayer ProtectionSpecial AbilityThreat LevelKill Method
Dharok the WretchedMeleeProtect from MeleeHits harder as his HP drops — can one-shot players at low HP when he’s near death🔴 CriticalMagic (Trident / Iban’s). Never let your prayer drop.
Ahrim the BlightedMagic + drains StrengthProtect from MagicCan drain your Strength level with each hit, reducing melee damage output🟠 HighRanged (Blowpipe / MSB). Magic works with Shadow or high-accuracy air spells but is inconsistent otherwise.
Karil the TaintedRanged + drains AgilityProtect from MissilesLowers your Agility level, draining run energy🟠 HighMagic (Trident / Iban’s). Bring a super restore or two if the run drain bothers you.
Verac the DefiledMeleeProtect from Melee25% chance to ignore protection prayers and armour — hits through everything🟡 MediumMagic (Trident / Iban’s). Keep HP above 40 in case he pierces prayer multiple times.
Guthan the InfestedMeleeProtect from Melee25% chance to heal himself for the damage dealt🟢 LowMagic (Trident / Iban’s). Low damage output — can often skip prayer if using tank gear.
Torag the CorruptedMeleeProtect from MeleeDrains run energy on hit🟢 LowestMagic (Trident / Iban’s). Minimal threat — lowest damage output of all brothers.

    The Optimal Kill Order

The order you kill the brothers matters. You want to eliminate the most dangerous ones while your supplies are full:

    1. Dharok — Always first. His low-HP damage scaling makes him the only brother capable of killing you from full health in one hit. Fight him with full prayer and full attention.
    2. Ahrim — Second. His Magic attacks hit hard without prayer, and the Strength drain is annoying if you are using melee for the crypt monsters later. Kill him while your prayer potions are still abundant.
    3. Karil — Third. Fast ranged attacks with an Agility drain that gets irritating over a long run. Better to clear him before the drain effect stacks.
    4. Verac — Fourth. His prayer-piercing can force you to eat food, but his overall damage output is moderate. A good midpoint before the easier brothers.
    5. Guthan — Fifth. Low damage, and his healing special is barely noticeable if you are praying correctly.
    6. Torag — Usually last (or the tunnel brother). Lowest threat. You can often kill Torag without even using prayer if you bring tank gear.

One of the six mounds will lead to the crypt tunnel. If you discover the tunnel early — say, on mound three — leave that brother for last, kill the other five above ground, then enter the crypt to finish the run.

📖 “Complete Walkthrough & Reward Potential” (click to expand)

    Complete Step-by-Step Walkthrough

Here is exactly how a Barrows run works from start to finish:

Step 1: Gear Up and Teleport In

Use a Barrows Teleport tablet or cast the spell to land directly at the mounds. If you are using a ring of dueling, equip it now — you will use it to bank at Ferox Enclave after the run.

Step 2: Dig Into Each Mound

Right-click your spade on each mound to dig down into the brother’s burial chamber. You do not need to dig on the hills themselves — click the spade on the mound entrance at ground level. Once inside, the brother will spawn and attack immediately, so have your protection prayer active before you dig.

Follow the kill order above. After defeating each brother, climb the rope or stairs back to the surface and move to the next mound.

    Step 3: Enter the Crypt

One mound will give you a “crypt” option instead of a standard burial chamber. Leave this mound for last. After killing the other five brothers above ground, enter the crypt. You are now in the tunnels.

    Step 4: Build Reward Potential

This is the part most new players get wrong. You need to kill a specific number of monsters in the tunnels before opening the chest to maximize your profit. (See the Reward Potential section below for the exact numbers and math.)

The short version: kill 2 skeletons and 1 bloodworm (or 2 skeletons and 1 crypt spider) while navigating toward the center chest. This gets you to approximately 86-88% reward potential — the sweet spot that maximizes rune drops without diluting the drop table with bolt racks, key halves, and dragon med helms.

Step 5: Navigate to the Center Chest

The tunnel layout is semi-random. Only certain doors open, and you need to find a path to the center room. If the sixth brother has not spawned during your navigation, he will appear when you open the center chest — be ready to fight him immediately.

A strange old lockpick lets you force open any door, bypassing the navigation puzzle entirely. At roughly 50,000 GP per lockpick (which holds multiple charges), you are effectively paying about 50k to save 10 to 15 minutes of cumulative tunnel wandering across several runs. For anyone farming Barrows seriously, this item pays for itself many times over in time saved.

Step 6: Kill the Final Brother and Loot

Defeat the sixth brother at the center chest. Once he is dead, open the chest to receive your rewards. Use your ring of dueling to teleport to Ferox Enclave, hit the rejuvenation pool, restock from the bank, and teleport back to Barrows for the next run.

Bonus tip: Speak to the Strange Old Man wandering outside the mounds to start a miniquest. Complete one Barrows run, return to him, and receive 20,000 Prayer XP — a nice one-time bonus for first-timers.

Reward Potential: The Hidden Loot Multiplier

Reward Potential (RP) is the single most misunderstood mechanic at Barrows, and misunderstanding it is expensive. Here is how it actually works:

    • Each Barrows brother killed adds 2 reward potential points. Killing all six gives you 12 RP from brothers alone.
    • Each tunnel monster killed adds RP equal to its combat level. A combat level 77 skeleton gives 77 points. A level 52 bloodworm gives 52.
    • The system caps at 1,012 total RP.
    • Crucially: reward potential affects only the quantity of runes, bolt racks, and other non-unique items. It does not affect your chance of receiving Barrows equipment. Unique drop rates depend solely on the number of brothers killed.

The 86.2% Sweet Spot (and Why Going Higher Hurts You)

The magic number is 86.2% reward potential, which equates to roughly 874-880 RP. At this threshold, you receive the maximum number of rune drops while avoiding the addition of bolt racks, key halves, and dragon med helms to the drop table.

Why does that matter? Because the drop table has a fixed number of “slots.” When bolt racks and dragon med helms enter the pool, they replace potential rune drops. Since death runes and blood runes are worth far more than bolt racks on a per-slot basis, going above 88% actually reduces your average chest value. You are trading consistent, valuable rune stacks for a chance at items worth a fraction as much.

Here is exactly how to hit the sweet spot:

    MethodMonsters to KillApproximate RP
    Fastest (recommended)6 brothers + 2 skeletons (level 77) + 1 bloodworm (level 52)~874
    Alternate6 brothers + 2 skeletons + 1 crypt spider (level 56)~878
    Alternate6 brothers + 1 giant crypt spider + 1 skeleton + 1 bloodworm~876-880
    Alternate6 brothers + 3 bloodworms + 1 crypt spider~880

Avoid killing giant crypt rats (level 43) and low-level crypt spiders — they give poor RP for the time spent. Bloodworms are fast kills with decent RP. Skeletons are the most efficient RP-per-second if you have a salve amulet equipped.

Gear Progression: Budget to Max Efficiency

Barrows is unusual in OSRS PvM because your gear matters less than your knowledge of mechanics. The brothers have almost no Magic defence, which means even low-level magic gear shreds through them. Here is what to aim for at each stage of account progression:

    Budget Setup (~500K GP)

This is the setup you use for your first Barrows runs. It works. It is not fast, but you will profit from runes alone even with zero unique drops.

    SlotItemWhy
Weapon (Magic)Iban’s Staff (u)Iban’s Blast hits 25 at 50 Magic. Best budget option by far. Requires Underground Pass quest.
Weapon (Ranged)Magic Shortbow (i) + Rune ArrowsFor Ahrim. Fast attack speed, decent accuracy. Upgrade to imbued version for extra damage.
HelmHelm of Neitiznot / Rune Full HelmPrayer bonus or defence. Either works.
AmuletAmulet of GloryGood all-around stats and a teleport option.
CapeArdougne Cloak / God CapeArdougne cloak for prayer bonus; god cape if you have it for magic accuracy.
BodyMystic Robe Top / Rune PlatebodyMagic accuracy or defence. Both work at this level.
LegsMystic Robe Bottom / Rune PlatelegsSame trade-off as above.
ShieldRune Kiteshield / Tome of FireDefence or magic damage boost if using fire spells.
GlovesCombat Bracelet / Rune GlovesRune gloves from RFD are better if you have them.
BootsClimbing Boots / Mystic BootsCheap strength bonus or cheap magic accuracy.
RingRing of DuelingFor banking at Ferox Enclave between runs.

    Mid-Game Setup (~5M-15M GP)

This is where Barrows starts feeling fast. The Trident of the Swamp is the single biggest upgrade you can make — it hits harder and faster than Iban’s, and the built-in spell means you never need to worry about runes for your main attack.

    SlotItemWhy
Weapon (Magic)Trident of the SwampPowered staff — no runes needed, scales with Magic level, 4-tick attack speed. The Barrows gold standard.
Weapon (Ranged)Toxic Blowpipe (Adamant Darts)Melts Ahrim. The faster you kill him, the less prayer you burn.
HelmAhrim’s Hood / Farseer HelmMagic accuracy. Ahrim’s hood drops from Barrows itself — satisfying to wear your own loot.
AmuletOccult Necklace+10% magic damage. The biggest magic damage boost per GP in the game at ~400k.
CapeImbued God Cape+2% magic damage. Requires Mage Arena 2. Worth the effort.
BodyAhrim’s Robetop / Mystic Robe TopAhrim’s for accuracy. Use what you can afford.
LegsAhrim’s Robeskirt / Mystic Robe BottomSame as above.
ShieldGhommal’s Hilt 2 / Book of DarknessHilt if you have medium CAs (prayer drain immunity is worth the offhand slot). Book otherwise.
GlovesBarrows GlovesBest all-around gloves in the game. If you do not have them yet, finish Recipe for Disaster.
BootsInfinity Boots / Wizard BootsMagic accuracy. Infinity boots at ~600k from the Mage Training Arena.
RingSeers Ring (i) / Ring of DuelingMagic accuracy or banking convenience.

    Max Efficiency Setup (~500M+ GP)

At this level, you are doing 18 to 20+ chests per hour and treating Barrows like a sprint. The Tumeken’s Shadow is absurdly strong against the brothers — it hits so accurately that you can skip a ranged switch for Ahrim entirely, saving inventory space and reducing kill times to seconds.

    SlotItemWhy
Weapon (Magic)Tumeken’s Shadow3× Magic accuracy and 3× Magic damage from gear. Hits 50+ on the brothers routinely. Kills Ahrim faster than a blowpipe — no switch needed.
Weapon (Spec)Dragon Claws / VoidwakerFor dumping special attack energy on Karil or Ahrim to save seconds per run.
HelmAncestral Hat+2% magic damage. Best-in-slot magic helm.
AmuletOccult NecklaceStill the best magic damage amulet. +10% is hard to beat.
    CapeImbued God Cape+2% magic damage.
BodyAncestral Robe Top+2% magic damage. Multiply by 3 with Shadow.
    LegsAncestral Robe Bottom+2% magic damage.
ShieldElidinis’ Ward (f) / Ghommal’s Hilt 2+3% magic damage with ward. Swap to hilt briefly to block prayer drain ticks, then back to ward.
    GlovesTormented Bracelet+5% magic damage.
BootsAvernic Treads / Eternal BootsBest-in-slot magic boots.
    RingMagus Ring+2% magic damage. Best-in-slot.

Note on the Eye of Ayak: A newer option that rivals the Shadow in specific setups. It provides strong magic damage and accuracy without the Shadow’s 1.4B+ GP price tag. If you have 90+ Magic and cannot afford a Shadow, the Eye of Ayak bridges the gap between a Trident and endgame efficiency. The Shadow is still faster overall, but the Eye makes high-efficiency Barrows accessible at a much lower price point.

How Much GP Does Barrows Actually Make?

Let us talk real numbers — not “up to” estimates, but what you should expect to see in your loot tracker over a long session. All figures assume you are hitting the 86-88% reward potential sweet spot and using protection prayers to minimize supply costs.

    The Two Income Streams

Barrows profit comes from two separate sources that work together:

    1. Runes and consumables (guaranteed, every chest): Death runes, blood runes, chaos runes, mind runes, and coins. This is your floor — the minimum you walk away with even if you go 100 chests dry on uniques.
    2. Barrows equipment (random, ~1/17.42 per chest): One of 24 unique armour and weapon pieces, each worth anywhere from ~63,000 GP (Karil’s Coif) to ~2,000,000+ GP (Ahrim’s Robeskirt/Robetop). These are your spikes — the drops that turn a good hour into a great one.

    Profit Breakdown by Setup Tier

    Setup TierChests/HourRune GP/ChestUnique EV/ChestTotal GP/Hour (Long-Term Avg)
    Budget — No Diary8-10~45,000 GP~28,000 GP500,000 – 750,000 GP
    Mid-Game — Hard Diary12-15~68,000 GP~28,000 GP1,100,000 – 1,600,000 GP
    Max Eff. — Hard Diary + Shadow18-20~68,000 GP~28,000 GP1,700,000 – 2,000,000+ GP
    Max Eff. — Elite Diary + Shadow18-20~90,000 GP~28,000 GP2,100,000 – 2,400,000+ GP

Supply costs: Subtract roughly 30,000 to 50,000 GP per hour for Barrows teleport tablets, ring of dueling charges, prayer potions (if not using Ghommal’s Hilt 2), and food for Verac. At higher efficiency levels with the Hilt, supply costs drop to near-zero aside from teleport tablets — your rune drops from a single chest cover the cost of 20+ teleports.

Current Barrows Unique Prices (July 2026)

Not all Barrows pieces are created equal. Here is where each set stands on the Grand Exchange right now:

SetMost Valuable PieceSet Total (Approx.)Demand Driver
Ahrim’sRobeskirt (~2.03M), Robetop (~1.99M)~4.5MBest magic armour outside of Ancestral/Virtus. High demand for Zulrah, raids, and general PvM.
Dharok’sGreataxe (~1.79M)~5.7M (set)Essential for NMZ training, Giant Mole, and specific Combat Achievement tasks. Greataxe holds value independently.
Karil’sLeathertop (~1.26M)~2.0MStrong magic defence with no negative melee bonuses. Used in PvP and mid-game PvM.
Verac’sPlateskirt (~379k)~800kPrayer bonus on each piece. Niche use for prayer-heavy content.
Torag’sPlatebody (~391k)~950kHigh defence, low cost. Budget tank gear.
Guthan’sChainskirt/Platebody (~229k)~730kFull-set healing effect useful for AFK Slayer and some GWD methods.

Ahrim’s and Dharok’s pieces are the big hits. Karil’s leathertop is the solid mid-tier drop. Everything else is “nice, but not changing your bank value overnight.” Over hundreds of chests, the rare drops average out to roughly 28,000 GP per chest in expected value — that is the number baked into the table above. Some hours you hit two Ahrim’s pieces and walk away with 6M+ GP. Other hours you go dry and make 800k from runes alone. Both outcomes are normal.

The Diary ROI: How Fast Does Hard Diary Pay for Itself?

The Morytania Hard Diary costs time and GP to complete — roughly 2 to 5 million GP in supplies and skilling costs depending on your starting stats, plus the hours spent training. At an extra ~130,000 to 180,000 GP per hour from the 50% rune bonus, the diary pays for itself in roughly 15 to 30 hours of Barrows farming. If you plan to do more than 30 hours of Barrows over the life of your account (and nearly everyone who farms Barrows does), the diary is pure profit from that point forward. It also unlocks the Morytania legs 3 teleport, which eliminates teleport tablet costs entirely.

📖 “Combat Achievement Tasks & RuneLite Plugins” (click to expand)

    Barrows Combat Achievement Tasks

There are 7 Combat Achievement tasks tied to Barrows worth a total of 14 points. Completing the Barrows-specific tasks alone will not get you to the medium CA tier (161 total points required), but they are a solid contribution — and most of them will complete naturally while you farm.

    TierTaskTypePointsStrategy
EasyDefence? What Defence?Restriction1Kill any brother using only magic damage. This completes automatically if you are using Iban’s, Trident, or Shadow.
EasyBarrows NoviceKill Count1Open the chest 10 times. Completes naturally within your first hour of farming.
MediumPray for SuccessPerfection2Kill all 6 brothers and loot the chest without taking damage from any brother. Use protection prayers plus freezing spells to keep melee brothers at range. Safe-spot the tunnel brother if possible.
MediumBarrows ChampionKill Count2Open the chest 25 times. Completes naturally in a few hours of farming.
MediumCan’t Touch MeMechanical2Kill Dharok, Verac, Torag, and Guthan without letting them attack you with melee. Freeze them with Ice spells (Ancient Magicks) or Entangle, then kill from a distance.
HardJust Like ThatRestriction3Kill Karil using only special attack damage. Bring multiple special-attack weapons (DDS, claws) and a blowpipe or crossbow to build spec. Takes a few rotations.
HardFaithless Crypt RunRestriction3Kill all 6 brothers and loot the chest with 0 prayer points the entire time. Bring high-defence tank gear, a lot of food, and fight the brothers in a safe order. This is genuinely difficult — expect multiple attempts.

The medium-tier tasks (Pray for Success, Barrows Champion, Can’t Touch Me) are all achievable with mid-game gear and patience. The hard-tier tasks require specific setups and multiple attempts. Do not expect to knock them out during casual farming — set aside dedicated sessions for Faithless Crypt Run in particular.

RuneLite Plugins That Make Barrows Smoother

    • Barrows Doors Highlighter — Colors doors in the crypt green (openable), yellow (puzzle), or red (locked). Removes the trial-and-error from tunnel navigation entirely. If you install one plugin for Barrows, make it this one.
    • Barrows Potential — Shows your current reward potential percentage in an overlay and highlights which monsters to kill to reach your target. Takes the mental math out of the tunnel phase.
    • Prayer Drain Timer (built into various PvM plugins) — Times the 18-second prayer drain cycle so you can equip Ghommal’s Hilt 2 just before the drain triggers, then switch back to your magic offhand. Saves prayer points without permanently sacrificing an offhand slot.

Grind It or Buy the GP: The Real Trade-Off

Here is the question most Barrows guides do not ask: is your time better spent farming Barrows, or doing literally anything else?

Let us put the numbers side by side. At 1.3 million GP per hour (a realistic mid-game rate with the Hard Diary), here is what you are trading:

    GoalHours at Barrows (1.3M/hr)Marketplace Alternative
    Buy Ahrim’s Robetop + Robeskirt (~4M GP)~3 hours~$1.60-$2.00 worth of gold
Buy a Trident of the Swamp (~3.5M GP)~2.7 hours~$1.40-$1.75 worth of gold
Fund 70 Prayer (Superior DBones, ~200M GP)~154 hours~$80-$100 worth of gold
Buy full Ancestral + Shadow (~1.6B GP)~1,230 hours~$500-$800 worth of gold

Barrows is great GP for a mid-level account. It will fund your whip, your trident, your first set of Ahrim’s, and your dragon bones for 70 Prayer comfortably. But if your goal is endgame gear — a Tumeken’s Shadow, full Masori, a Twisted Bow — you are looking at hundreds or thousands of hours at Barrows to fund those purchases. At some point, the time-to-GP ratio stops making sense, especially if you have a job, school, or other commitments that make your free time more valuable than minimum wage.

This is not to say you should buy gold. Plenty of players enjoy the progression — earning every upgrade through PvM, feeling the satisfaction of buying their first piece of Bandos with GP they farmed themselves. If that is you, Barrows is a fantastic place to start that journey.

But if you have already done the mid-level grind on another account, or you just want to jump into raids with friends without spending 1,200 hours at Barrows first, buying gold or a pre-built account gets you there immediately. The key is doing it without getting your account banned or losing your money.

Never send money directly to a gold seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until the gold is delivered to your account. If the seller fails to deliver, you can dispute the transaction and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse — once the money is sent, it is gone.

    2. For Gold: Use Face-to-Face Trading

Reputable sellers trade gold to you directly in-game — player-to-player, face-to-face, in a safe location like the Grand Exchange or a Player-Owned House. Avoid sellers who insist on dropping gold in the Wilderness (a common setup for luring), using the party room (public and unverifiable), or any method that cannot be clearly traced.

    3. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

With the Jagex account system now standard, controlling the registered email is the single most important security step when buying an OSRS account. If a seller cannot or will not transfer the email, walk away. The original owner can recover the account through Jagex support at any time using creation details and billing history. Whoever controls the registered email controls the account.

After receiving the login details, immediately: change the registered email, change the password, remove all old recovery information, enable 2FA on your device, unlink any third-party accounts (Google, Steam, Apple), and set a bank PIN.

    4. Check Seller Reputation

On PlayerBay, sellers have public profiles with completed orders, buyer reviews, and verification badges. Look for sellers with a history of successful OSRS transactions and recent positive reviews. Sellers who push you to complete deals off-platform, refuse to show the gold or account in-game before payment, or have vague listing descriptions are red flags.

You can technically start Barrows with 43 Prayer, 50 Magic (Iban’s Blast), and 50 Ranged after completing Priest in Peril. It will be slow — expect 6 to 8 chests per hour — but it works. Each chest will still profit even at that speed.

With a budget setup: 8-10 chests. With a Trident of the Swamp and Hard Diary: 12-15 chests. With Tumeken’s Shadow and max efficiency: 18-20 chests. Speed comes from faster kills (better gear), shorter tunnel navigation (strange lockpick), faster banking (Ferox Enclave pool + ring of dueling), and Ghommal’s Hilt 2 removing the need to drink prayer potions.

With all six brothers killed, you have a 1/17.42 chance (~5.74%) of receiving ANY Barrows unique item per chest. Each specific piece (e.g., Ahrim’s Robetop) is approximately 1/390. The drop rate scales linearly with the number of brothers killed: killing 5 brothers gives ~1/20.9, 4 gives ~1/26.1, and so on. Kill all six — always.

No. Reward potential affects only the quantity of runes, bolt racks, coins, and other non-unique items. Barrows equipment drop rates are determined exclusively by the number of brothers killed. This is why the optimal strategy is to kill exactly enough monsters to hit 86-88% RP — you maximize rune profit without wasting time on extra kills that do not improve your unique chances.

Yes — for mid-level accounts, Barrows is one of the best GP/hour activities in the game. At 1.1-1.6M GP/hr with the Hard Diary, it out-earns nearly every skilling method and most Slayer tasks at comparable combat levels. It also requires zero risk (no Wilderness, no death penalty beyond reclaiming items), making it ideal for players who want consistent profit without the stress of high-stakes PvM. However, it does not compete with endgame moneymakers like raids (5-15M+/hr), Corrupted Gauntlet, or high-efficiency Vorkath — which is expected, since Barrows is accessible at combat level 60-70 while those activities require 90+ combat stats and extensive questing.

“Worth it” is subjective, but the numbers are clear: the Hard Diary increases your profit by roughly 40-50% through the 50% rune bonus alone. If you are doing a handful of runs for fun or for Combat Achievement tasks, the diary is optional. If you plan to farm Barrows for GP, the diary should be considered a prerequisite — farming without it leaves nearly half your potential profit on the table.

Ahrim’s pieces are the most consistently valuable (robetop ~2M, robeskirt ~2M, set ~4.5M), driven by demand from mages who cannot afford Ancestral or Virtus. Dharok’s greataxe (~1.79M) is the most valuable single weapon. Karil’s leathertop (~1.26M) holds value well. Guthan’s, Torag’s, and Verac’s pieces have largely collapsed in price — most are under 400k each, with some (Guthan’s warspear at ~122k) barely covering the cost of the teleport tablets used to obtain them. You hope for Ahrim’s and Dharok’s; everything else is a consolation prize.

Buying OSRS gold carries inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service, which prohibit real-world trading. That said, millions of players purchase gold every year, and the risk is dramatically reduced when you buy through a marketplace with escrow protection (funds held until delivery confirmed), verified sellers with long transaction histories, and face-to-face in-game trading rather than suspicious transfer methods. PlayerBay’s escrow system means you never send money directly to a seller — your payment is protected until the gold is in your account.

    The Bottom Line

Barrows is the perfect first boss. It teaches fundamental PvM skills — prayer switching, gear swaps, efficient routing, supply management — without punishing mistakes with death costs or lost items. The rune drops provide a guaranteed profit floor that means you almost never leave a session poorer than when you arrived. The unique drops provide the dopamine spikes that keep you coming back. And at 1.1 to 1.6 million GP per hour with the Hard Diary, it is genuinely competitive with many higher-level moneymakers that require far better gear and stats.

It also has a clear ceiling. Barrows will fund your mid-game, but it will never fund endgame — not unless you plan to spend a thousand hours there. For some players, that ceiling is exactly where the journey ends and the real game begins. For others, it is where buying gold or an account starts to look like the smarter play.

There is no wrong answer. But whatever you choose, do the Morytania Hard Diary first — because if you are going to farm Barrows at all, you might as well earn 50% more while you are there.

OSRS New Player Goals: A Structured Path from Tutorial Island to Mid-Game

Starting Old School RuneScape in 2026 is overwhelming in a way that is hard to describe to anyone who has not done it. There are 24 skills. Over 160 quests. A Grand Exchange with thousands of items. A decade of wiki pages, YouTube guides, and Reddit threads — many of which contradict each other or were written before Sailing, before the Jagex account system, and before the meta shifted around them.

Most new-player guides solve this by handing you a list of 10 things to do and wishing you luck. This one is different. This one gives you the order — the sequence that minimizes backtracking, maximizes early XP, and gets you from Tutorial Island to Barrows Gloves (the accepted “welcome to mid-game” milestone) as efficiently as possible while still letting you enjoy the journey.

And if, somewhere along that journey, you decide that 100 hours of questing is not how you want to spend your limited free time, we cover the marketplace alternative too — because knowing your options is part of playing smart.

Goal 1: Knock Out the Big XP Quests First

The single biggest mistake new players make is training combat skills manually from level 1. Do not kill cows. Do not kill goblins. The early-game quests exist specifically to skip this phase, and they are designed to be completed on fresh level-3 accounts.

Here is the order that minimizes travel and maximizes XP:

    OrderQuestXP RewardsRequirementsWhat It Gives You
1Waterfall Quest13,750 Attack XP + 13,750 Strength XPNone — completable at level 3Takes you from 1→30 Attack and Strength instantly. Also rewards 2 diamonds, 2 gold bars, and 40 mithril seeds.
2Fight Arena12,175 Attack XP + 2,175 Thieving XPNone — completable at low combatPushes Attack past 40. Unlocks rune weapons.
3The Grand Tree18,400 Attack XP + 7,900 Agility XP + 2,150 Magic XP25 Agility (can be trained or lamped)Safe-spottable boss. Required for Monkey Madness. Unlocks spirit tree network for fast travel.
4Tree Gnome Village11,450 Attack XPNoneRequired for The Grand Tree and Monkey Madness chain. Unlocks spirit tree to the Battlefield of Khazard.
5Vampire Slayer4,825 Attack XPNoneQuick kill. Free Attack XP.
6Monkey Madness I35,000 XP in Attack & Defence (or Strength & Hitpoints) + 20,000 XP in the other pairThe Grand Tree, Tree Gnome Village, 43+ Prayer recommendedDragon scimitar access — your best-in-slot weapon until 70 Attack. Choose the Attack/Defence reward for faster melee progression.

After this quest chain, you will have roughly 50+ Attack, 30+ Strength, 30+ Defence, and access to the dragon scimitar — all without spending a single hour manually grinding combat. The total time investment is 3 to 5 hours for a new player following a guide, and it eliminates what would otherwise be 15 to 25 hours of inefficient melee training on cows, rock crabs, or sand crabs.

This is the single highest-impact thing you can do in your first few sessions. Do not skip it.

Goal 2: Unlock Fairy Rings and the Ardougne Cloak

OSRS has no universal fast-travel system. The closest thing is the fairy ring network — 55 teleport locations spread across the map, accessible through three-letter codes — and unlocking it is one of the first things every account should do.

Here is what most guides do not tell you: you do not need to complete Fairytale Part 2 to use fairy rings. You only need to progress the quest far enough for the Fairy Godfather to grant you permission — roughly 10 to 15 minutes past the quest start. No skill requirements. No boss fights. Walk in, talk to the NPCs, equip a dramen staff (obtained during Fairytale Part 1 from the lost city of Zanaris), and you are done.

    The prerequisite chain is fast:

    • The Restless Ghost → Priest in Peril → Nature Spirit → Lost City → Fairytale Part 1 → Fairytale Part 2 (partial)

Total time: 3 to 4 hours for a new player. After this, you can teleport to places that would otherwise require 10-minute runs, charter ships, or expensive teleport tablets. Fairy rings are free, fast, and used constantly from the early game through endgame raids.

While you are in the Ardougne area, complete the Ardougne Easy Diary. The Ardougne cloak 1 gives you unlimited teleports to the Kandarin Monastery — south of Ardougne, near a fairy ring, and close to the Ardougne farming patch. It is the single best low-requirement teleport item in the game and you will use it for herb runs, questing, and general navigation for hundreds of hours.

Goal 3: Set Up Herb Runs for Passive GP

Everything in OSRS costs GP. Gear upgrades. Quest items. Construction. Prayer training. If you are constantly broke, your account progression stalls. The solution is herb runs — the most time-efficient money-maker available to low-level accounts.

Here is how it works: you plant herb seeds in farming patches across the world. They grow in 80 minutes of real time whether you are playing or logged out. You come back, harvest, replant, and bank the profit. Each run takes 5 to 7 minutes of active time and generates roughly 190,000 to 200,000 GP in profit at current Grand Exchange prices (July 2026).

The most profitable herbs for early-game accounts:

HerbFarming LevelSeed CostProfit per Patch (Avg)Effective GP/Hour
    Toadflax38~13,000 GP~19,000 GP~1.9M GP/hr
    Ranarr32~291,000 GP~16,000 GP~1.6M GP/hr
    Avantoe50~6,400 GP~14,000 GP~1.4M GP/hr
    Kwuarm56~26,000 GP~18,000 GP~1.8M GP/hr

At level 38 Farming — which you can reach in a few hours through tree runs and quest rewards — toadflax runs with all accessible patches produce roughly 190,000 GP per 6-minute run. Do three runs per day (morning, afternoon, evening) and you are earning 570,000 GP for 18 minutes of work. That funds your dragon scimitar, your Barrows gear, your Construction training, and your first bond.

    Required unlocks:

    • Fairy rings (see Goal 2) — for the Ardougne and Canifis patches
    • Magic secateurs (Fairytale Part 1 reward) — 10% more herbs per harvest
    • Ultracompost — prevents disease and increases yield
    • Ectophial (Ghosts Ahoy quest) — instant teleport to the Port Phasmatys patch, right next to a bank and fairy ring
    • Explorer’s Ring (Lumbridge Easy Diary) — teleport to the Falador patch

Herb runs are the engine that powers your early account. Set them up early. Do them consistently. Everything else gets easier when you are not broke.

    Goal 4: Get Barrows Gloves

Barrows Gloves are the defining milestone of the early game. When an OSRS player says they are “starting the mid-game,” they mean they just finished Recipe for Disaster and bought their gloves from the Culinaromancer’s Chest in Lumbridge cellar for 130,000 coins (reduced to 104,000 after the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary).

Why do Barrows Gloves matter so much? Because they are the best all-around gloves in the game for a massive chunk of your account progression — second only to Ferocious Gloves for melee, Zaryte Vambraces for ranged, and Tormented Bracelet for magic. For general PvM where you use multiple attack styles (Dagannoth Kings, Royal Titans, Slayer, quest bosses), Barrows Gloves are optimal. They are also required for the Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Diary.

    What It Actually Takes

Recipe for Disaster is not one quest. It is 10 subquests plus a final boss encounter, gated behind 175 Quest Points and two major prerequisite quests (Desert Treasure and Horror from the Deep). For a new player starting from scratch, expect:

    ComponentTime EstimateNotes
RFD subquests (all 8)15–30 hoursIncludes travel, item gathering, boss fights
175 Quest Points60–100+ hours~90 quests total; time varies massively by quest length and guide usage
Skill training for requirements15–25 hours70 Cooking, 48 Agility, 53 Thieving, 50 Mining, 53 Fishing, 25 Herblore, plus hidden reqs
Desert Treasure chain5–10 hoursSeveral long prerequisite quests; high-combat bosses
Horror from the Deep1–2 hoursStraightforward boss with 43+ Prayer
Total (efficient, following guides)100–150 hoursCloser to 100 with optimal routing and RuneLite quest helper; closer to 150+ for first-timers

The core skill requirements are manageable. The real gate is the 175 Quest Points — you need approximately 90 quests completed, and many of them chain into each other through prerequisite webs. This is where the Slayermusiq1 optimal quest order spreadsheet becomes invaluable. It sequences quests so that the XP rewards from early quests reduce or eliminate the need to manually train skills for later quest requirements.

Barrows Gloves are worth it. They will be your default gloves for 80% of your account’s PvM life. But they are also a genuine time commitment — the single longest structured goal most new accounts will pursue before touching endgame content. The next section covers what to do if 100–150 hours of questing is not how you want to spend your first few months in Gielinor.

Goal 5: Train Combat Through Slayer

After the early combat quests, you have a choice: train combat manually on crabs and nightmare zone, or train combat through Slayer and get paid for it.

Slayer is the correct answer — and it is not close. Here is why:

    • The black mask (and later slayer helmet) provides a 16.67% damage and accuracy boost against your current Slayer task. This makes Slayer the most efficient combat training method for non-bossing combat from the moment you can afford a black mask (~400k GP from the Grand Exchange or 10 minutes of herb run profit).
    • Slayer monsters drop valuable loot. Even mid-level tasks like bloodvelds, dust devils, and kurasks drop alchable items, herbs, seeds, and runes. By the time you hit 99 Slayer — a journey that takes hundreds of hours — you will have earned hundreds of millions of GP in passive loot.
    • Slayer unlocks are permanent account upgrades. Gargoyles (75 Slayer), brutal black dragons (77), nechryael (80), and abyssal demons (85) all represent significant GP/hr increases. The sooner you start Slayer, the sooner your combat training starts paying for itself.
    • Slayer is the slowest skill to 99 for a reason. You cannot meaningfully speed it up. Every hour you spend training combat off-task is an hour of Slayer XP you will have to make up later — which is why players who max combat at Nightmare Zone often find themselves with 99 in all combat stats and level 70 Slayer, staring down 400+ hours of inefficient post-max Slayer training.

Start Slayer as soon as you have base 60 melee stats from the quest chain in Goal 1. Use a black mask. Block bad tasks. Skip metal dragons until you have better gear. And let the combat XP accumulate naturally while your bank value rises.

📖 “Goals 6–10: Skills, AFK Methods, RuneLite, Community & Long-Term Path” (click to expand)

Goal 6: Unlock Essential Skills and Minigames

Several skills and minigames are locked behind short quests. Unlocking them early prevents the frustration of discovering a training method you want to use — only to find you need to detour through a 20-minute quest first.

    UnlockQuest RequiredWhy It Matters
HerbloreDruidic RitualUnlocks the entire Herblore skill. Without it, you cannot clean herbs, make potions, or train the skill — which gates several quests later.
RunecraftingRune MysteriesUnlocks Runecrafting. Also required for Guardians of the Rift, the best Runecrafting training minigame, which gives passive crafting and mining XP.
Guardians of the RiftTemple of the EyeThe minigame that made Runecrafting fun. Accessible at level 27 Runecrafting. Gives runes, XP in multiple skills, and the Raiments of the Eye outfit.
WintertodtNone (just travel to Great Kourend)Firemaking boss that gives Firemaking XP, Construction XP, Woodcutting XP, and supply crates worth millions. The standard low-HP method (10 HP accounts) is most efficient.
TemporossNone (travel to Al Kharid dock)Fishing boss that gives Fishing XP, Cooking XP, and the fish barrel — an inventory upgrade that doubles AFK fishing time.
Giants’ FoundryNone (travel to Al Kharid)Smithing minigame that uses scrap metal items. More engaging than Blast Furnace, solid XP rates, and profitable at low levels.
Hunter (box traps)Eagles’ PeakUnlocks box traps — the fastest early-game Hunter training method for catching chinchompas and salamanders.
Thieving (blackjacking)The FeudUnlocks blackjacking — the fastest Thieving XP from 45 to 91. Useful for rushing 53 Thieving for Desert Treasure.

Knock these out in one dedicated session — most are 10 to 30 minutes each — and you will never have to interrupt your training flow later.

Goal 7: Learn AFK Training Methods

OSRS rewards active play. But it also rewards having the game open on a second monitor while you do something else. Almost every skill has an AFK method — slower than the click-intensive alternative, but progress you would not otherwise make during work, study, or Netflix.

    SkillAFK MethodXP/hr (Approx.)Click Interval
Combat (Melee)Nightmare Zone (normal custom rumble)60k–80k5–20 minutes
Combat (Ranged)Nightmare Zone or ammonite crabs50k–70k5–10 minutes
MagicSplashing on rats or seagulls13k–20k20 minutes
    FishingBarbarian fishing or monkfish30k–50k1–3 minutes
WoodcuttingRedwoods (90+ WC) or yews60k–90k1–2 minutes
MiningMotherlode Mine or Shooting Stars25k–40k1–7 minutes (stars: up to 7 min)
CookingAny fish at a range200k+1–2 minutes
    CraftingGlassblowing or battlestaff crafting60k–100k30–60 seconds
SmithingDart tips at an anvil60k–100k30–60 seconds
FletchingLongbows (u) or dart tips80k–150k45–60 seconds

AFK methods are slower than active methods — sometimes by 50% or more. But an hour of AFK Woodcutting at redwoods while you answer emails is an hour of XP that did not cost you any attention. Over weeks and months, AFK training adds up to millions of XP that would otherwise require dedicated play sessions.

Goal 8: Set Up RuneLite Properly

RuneLite is the official third-party client approved by Jagex, and it is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in OSRS. A properly configured RuneLite installation saves you hundreds of hours across an account’s lifetime. A poorly configured one — or worse, sticking with the vanilla client — means you are playing a harder, slower version of the game than everyone else.

    Essential plugins to enable immediately:

    • Quest Helper — Overlays quest steps on your screen, highlights NPCs to talk to, items to pick up, and puzzles to solve. Turns questing from “read the wiki on a second monitor” to “follow the blue arrow.” Single biggest time-saver in the game.
    • Menu Entry Swapper — Reorders right-click menus. Left-click to bank. Left-click to enter caves. Left-click to pickpocket. Once you configure it, you will wonder how you ever played without it.
    • GPU Plugin — Increases render distance, smooths frame rates, and adds anti-aliasing. Makes the game look significantly better with no performance cost.
    • Tile Markers — Place colored markers on the ground for boss mechanics, safe spots, and optimal skilling positions. Used extensively in PvM guides.
    • 117 HD — Optional graphical overhaul that adds dynamic lighting, shadows, and texture improvements. Purely cosmetic, but makes the game look like it was released this decade.
    • Banked XP — Calculates how much XP is stored in your bank in the form of unfinished supplies. Useful for planning training sessions.
    • Loot Tracker — Tracks every drop you receive and their Grand Exchange value. Satisfying to watch the numbers climb over a long Slayer task.
    • Herb Run Tools (various) — Timers for herb growth cycles, tool leprechaun note reminders, and patch status overlays.

Spend 30 minutes configuring RuneLite before you start questing. The time investment pays for itself within your first 10 quests.

Goal 9: Find a Clan or Community

OSRS can be played solo — but the players who stick around for years are almost universally part of a community. A good clan gives you:

    • Answers to questions faster than the wiki (and with context a wiki cannot provide)
    • Group content partners — Barbarian Assault, Nightmare, raids, and bossing in general are better with people you know
    • Accountability — seeing clanmates hit milestones keeps you motivated
    • Social interaction that makes the grind feel less solitary

The OSRS forums (services.runescape.com), the official OSRS Discord, and Reddit (r/2007scape) all have clan recruitment channels. Look for a clan that matches your timezone, activity level, and content interests. Do not join a hardcore PvM clan if you are still working on Barrows Gloves. Do not join a social-only clan if you want raid teams. There is a clan for every playstyle.

Goal 10: Define Your Long-Term Path

OSRS has no linear endgame. There is no final boss, no credit roll, no “you win” screen. The closest thing to a structured endpoint is the Max Cape, which requires ~960 to 1,100 efficient hours across 24 skills and is realistically a 2,000 to 3,500+ hour commitment for a normal player. For most accounts, that is 2 to 5 years of consistent play.

Before you sink a thousand hours into the game, figure out what you actually want:

GoalWhat It MeansApprox. Time to Reach
Quest CapeComplete every quest. Current as of 2026: 170+ quests. Requires ~85 combat, base 70s in most skills.200–400 hours from scratch
Fire CapeDefeat Jad in the Fight Caves. The first major PvM achievement. Requires 75+ Ranged, 43+ Prayer.50–80 hours from scratch (incl. training)
Infernal CapeDefeat Zuk in the Inferno. One of the hardest PvM challenges in any MMO. Months of attempts for most players.Hundreds of hours of practice
Raids (CoX, ToB, ToA)Endgame group PvM. Tombs of Amascut (ToA) is the most accessible entry point. Chambers of Xeric (CoX) is the classic. Theatre of Blood (ToB) is the hardest.150–300 hours to ToA-ready; 500+ to ToB-ready
99 in a specific skillA single 99 is 10–200+ hours depending on the skill. Common first 99s: Cooking (5 hours), Firemaking (30 hours at Wintertodt), Fishing.Varies massively by skill
Max Cape (all 24 skills to 99)The ultimate achievement. 47,334 maxed players as of June 2026. This is a multi-year goal for anyone with a life outside the game.2,000–4,500+ hours
Pet hunting / Collection logChasing boss pets and filling the collection log. Infinite content — some pets are 5,000+ kills dry.Effectively infinite

There is no wrong goal. But there is a wrong approach: grinding without a goal, burning out, and quitting before you reach anything you care about. Pick a target — Barrows Gloves is the natural first one — and work toward it. When you reach it, pick the next one. That loop is what OSRS is built on.

Grind It or Buy It: The Real Trade-Off for New Players

At this point, you have seen the numbers. Barrows Gloves take 100 to 150 hours. A Quest Cape takes 200 to 400 hours. Maxing takes 2,000 to 4,500 hours. These are not small commitments — they are comparable to learning a new language, training for a marathon, or completing a university semester.

For some players, the grind is the game. The satisfaction of earning Barrows Gloves yourself, of walking into the Culinaromancer’s Chest with 175 Quest Points you earned one quest at a time — that feeling is why OSRS has survived for over a decade while dozens of competing MMOs have shut down.

For other players, the math is simpler: 100 to 150 hours of questing costs more in time than it would cost to buy a Barrows Gloves starter account. Here is the comparison:

What You WantTime Cost (Grinding)Marketplace CostWhat You Get
Barrows Gloves account100–150 hours$50–$60Account with ~175 QP, Barrows Gloves, Monkey Madness done, and early quest XP rewards applied. Ready to start mid-game immediately.
Fire Cape account50–80 hours (from scratch)$100–$200Barrows Gloves + Fire Cape account. Mid-game combat ready.
Quest Cape account200–400 hours$250–$500+All quests complete. No quest-locked content gates. Ready for achievement diaries and endgame PvM.
Maxed main account2,000–4,500 hours$300–$1,500+All 24 skills at 99. Endgame ready. No skilling grind ever again.
Gold (to buy bonds or gear)Hours of herb runs / Slayer~$0.30–$0.50 per million GPSkip the GP grind. 10M GP (~$3–$5) funds early gear and supplies for weeks.

At the U.S. federal minimum wage, 100 hours of your time is worth $726 before taxes. A Barrows Gloves account costs less than $60. From a pure time-value perspective, buying the account and skipping the early-game quest grind is roughly 12× cheaper than grinding it yourself — and that is before you account for the fact that most people value their leisure time higher than minimum wage.

This is not an argument that you should buy an account. Plenty of players — including many who have been playing since 2013 — consider the early-game questing journey a rite of passage. The Waterfall Quest run on a fresh level 3. The first dragon scimitar. The moment you equip Barrows Gloves for the first time. Those memories are real, and no marketplace purchase can create them.

But if your goal is to raid with friends, boss with your clan, or simply skip the part of OSRS you already experienced on a previous account — buying a head-start account or gold gets you there immediately. The key is doing it without getting your account recovered, banned, or stolen.

How to Buy an OSRS Account or Gold Safely

If you decide the grind is not worth your time, here is how to make a purchase without becoming a cautionary tale:

    1. Only Use Escrow-Protected Marketplaces

Never send money directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, or cryptocurrency. On PlayerBay, your payment is held in escrow until you confirm you have received the account or gold. If the seller fails to deliver, you can dispute the transaction and get your money back. Direct deals offer zero recourse.

    2. For Accounts: Registered Email Transfer Is Everything

With the Jagex account system now standard, the most important security step is full control of the registered email. If a seller cannot or will not transfer the email, walk away. The original owner can recover the account at any time through Jagex support using creation details and billing history. Whoever controls the email controls the account — permanently.

After purchase: change the registered email, change the password, remove all old recovery information, enable 2FA on your device, unlink third-party accounts (Google, Steam, Apple), and set a bank PIN. These steps take 10 minutes and are the difference between owning the account and borrowing it.

    3. For Gold: Face-to-Face Trading Only

Reputable sellers trade gold directly to your account in-game, face-to-face, at a safe location like the Grand Exchange. Avoid sellers who insist on dropping gold in the Wilderness, using the Party Room, or any unverifiable transfer method.

    4. Bonds Are an Option (but Not Always the Best One)

As of July 2026, an Old School bond costs approximately 13.3 million GP on the Grand Exchange. Grinding for a bond in free-to-play — where the best money-makers earn 150,000 to 300,000 GP per hour — takes 40 to 80 hours. That means you are effectively “working” for less than $0.10 per hour in real-world value. For most players, buying membership directly with real money (~$12.49/month) or buying a few million GP to fund a bond is a far better use of time than grinding F2P for weeks.

For a new player following guides efficiently, 100 to 150 hours of in-game time. This includes completing approximately 90 quests, training the required skills (70 Cooking, 48 Agility, 53 Thieving, 50 Mining, 53 Fishing, and others), and finishing the two major prerequisite quests — Desert Treasure and Horror from the Deep. Experienced players rushing on a new account can push this down to 70 to 80 hours. Casual players who read quest dialogue and explore along the way will spend 150 to 200+ hours.

Yes. Waterfall Quest has no combat level requirement and no skill requirements. You will need to navigate past level 84 Moss Guardians and level 86 Fire Giants, but these are in single-combat areas — you can attack lower-level monsters to avoid them, or simply run past with food. The reward is 13,750 Attack XP and 13,750 Strength XP, taking you from level 1 to level 30 in both skills instantly. It is the single most efficient early-game quest in OSRS.

Almost never. At the current bond price of ~13.3 million GP, and with F2P money-makers earning 150k to 300k GP per hour, you are looking at 40 to 80 hours of grinding — for 14 days of membership. That is equivalent to earning less than $0.10 per hour in real-world terms. Buying membership directly (~$12.49/month) or buying a few million GP to fund a bond through a marketplace is a dramatically better use of your time. The only exception is if you genuinely enjoy the F2P grind and treat it as part of the game experience.

The most accessible and useful AFK methods for new accounts: Nightmare Zone for melee combat (60k–80k XP/hr, 5–20 minute AFK), Shooting Stars for Mining (25k–35k XP/hr, up to 7 minutes per click, 50k–80k GP/hr in stardust), woodcutting yews (35k–50k XP/hr, 1–2 minute AFK, profitable), and fishing monkfish (35k–45k XP/hr, 1–2 minute AFK, profitable). All of these can be done while working, studying, or watching content on a second monitor.

At 38 Farming with toadflax seeds, you can make ~190,000 GP per run (roughly 6 minutes of active time) across the accessible patches. At 32 Farming with ranarr seeds, roughly 160,000 GP per run. Both translate to effective rates of 1.6 million to 1.9 million GP per hour of active play. Doing 3 runs per day nets you 500,000 to 600,000 GP for 18 minutes of work — enough to fund gear upgrades, supplies, and your first bond within a week or two.

If your goal is efficiency, follow the Slayermusiq1 optimal quest order spreadsheet. It sequences quests so that XP rewards from early quests eliminate the need to manually train skills for later requirements. If your goal is enjoyment, do whatever looks fun — but be aware that you will spend significantly more time on manual skilling to meet quest requirements that could have been bypassed with better routing. Most players do a combination: follow the optimal order loosely, but detour for content they find engaging.

The safest way: buy from a marketplace with escrow protection (like PlayerBay), choose a seller with verified status and positive reviews, ensure the seller transfers the registered email (Jagex account system), immediately secure the account after purchase (change email, password, remove recovery info, enable 2FA, set bank PIN), and never complete a deal off-platform where escrow protections do not apply. Account buying carries inherent risk under Jagex’s Terms of Service regardless of method.

    The Bottom Line

OSRS is not a game you finish in a week, a month, or even a year. It is a game you play for years — and the players who last that long are the ones who find a rhythm between efficiency and enjoyment.

The 10-goal roadmap above is designed to give you that rhythm. Knock out the XP quests first so you are not punching cows for 20 hours. Unlock fairy rings so you are not walking everywhere. Set up herb runs so you are not constantly broke. Push toward Barrows Gloves as your first major milestone — because once you have them, you have finished the tutorial and the real game begins. Train combat through Slayer so your kills pay for themselves. Learn AFK methods so your account progresses while you live your life. And define what you are actually working toward, because OSRS is too big to play without a goal.

If that sounds like 100 to 150 hours of early-game questing you would rather skip, that is not a character flaw. It is a rational recognition that your time has value — and there are marketplace options that let you start at mid-game immediately. Whether you grind it or buy it, the important thing is that you are playing OSRS in a way that feels good, not in a way that feels like a second job.

  • How Long It Takes to Max in OSRS: Complete Skill-by-Skill Breakdown

How Long It Takes to Max in OSRS: Complete Skill-by-Skill Breakdown

Maxing in Old School RuneScape — hitting level 99 in every skill — is one of the longest grinds in any MMO. Not the longest individual achievement, but the longest cumulative one: 24 separate skills, each requiring 13,034,431 XP, adding up to over 312 million total experience points before you can buy the cape.

If you are researching this topic, you probably want an honest number. Not “it depends,” not “a long time.” You want the hours.

Here is the short answer: at maximum efficiency, maxing all 24 skills takes approximately 960 to 1,100 hours of in-game time. The fastest verified speedrun record — set by He Box Jonge before the release of Sailing — clocked in at 771 hours for 23 skills. With Sailing now on the board, the theoretical minimum is likely in the 850 to 900-hour range, though no sub-900-hour post-Sailing max cape speedrun has been publicly verified yet. For a normal player using good but not world-record methods, expect 2,000 to 3,500 hours. For a casual player mixing AFK methods with relaxed training, it can easily stretch past 4,000 hours.

Below, we break down exactly where those hours go — skill by skill, method by method — and what the total cost looks like in both time and gold. If, by the end, you decide the grind is not for you, we also cover how to buy a maxed account safely.

What “Maxed” Means in OSRS Right Now

With the release of Sailing in November 2025, the max total level increased from 2,277 to 2,376. That is 24 skills at level 99 each, requiring a combined 312,826,344 XP. Once you reach that milestone, you can purchase the Max Cape from Mac — an NPC tucked away on an island west of the Warriors’ Guild — for 2,376,000 coins.

The Max Cape is not just cosmetic. It inherits every skillcape perk in the game and matches the stats of a trimmed skillcape. It is a genuine utility item, not a trophy — and that is part of why so many players pursue it.

As of June 1, 2026, the OSRS Wiki reports 47,334 maxed players across all account types, with OSRS adding maxed accounts at roughly 8.5× the rate of RS3 — approximately 76 new maxed players per day during measured periods. It is still rare (fewer than 50,000 accounts out of millions of active players), but the number is climbing steadily as training methods improve and more players treat maxing as a structured long-term goal.

    The Fastest Max Cape Speedruns

If you want to know the absolute ceiling, look at the speedrunning community. The current verified record for the fastest max cape belongs to He Box Jonge, who achieved 2,277 total (23 skills, pre-Sailing) in 771 hours of in-game playtime — equivalent to 32 days, 3 hours, and 3 minutes of continuous play. He broadcast his entire run on Twitch and YouTube, and the final time demolished his original sub-1,000-hour goal by over 200 hours.

His closest competitor, JCW, finished at approximately 792 hours in the same race. The margin came down to efficiency in specific skills: JCW lost over 7 hours in Fishing alone by underestimating net-fishing XP rates in the early levels.

Post-Sailing records are still taking shape. One verified post-Sailing entry — from player Vynful — sits at 999 hours on the Speedrun.com leaderboard, flagged by moderators as potentially warranting a separate category from the pre-Sailing runs. He Box Jonge has confirmed on stream that he is working on post-Sailing route planning, but no sub-900-hour time has been publicly submitted yet. Sailing adds a 24th skill to the grind, and even at optimal Barracuda Trial rates (70 to 80 efficient hours for 99), it pushes the theoretical max cape speedrun past 850 hours — possibly toward 880 to 900+. At this level of optimization, every tick of every skill matters, and the community is still discovering the fastest Sailing routes.

    Complete Skill-by-Skill EHP Breakdown

EHP — Efficient Hours Played — is the community-standard metric for measuring how long each skill should take if you are using the mathematically fastest training methods. The rates below are sourced from WiseOldMan’s EHP tracker, with Sailing data drawn from TheOatrix’s 1–99 Sailing guide, the OSRS Wiki, and community testing throughout the first half of 2026.

Skills are listed from slowest to fastest. “0-time” means the skill is trained passively alongside other skills — usually through Slayer — and does not add hours to the total.

SkillEHP to 99Fastest MethodPeak XP Rate
    Slayer~166.5 hoursEfficient Slayer with optimal block/skip list~93–99k XP/hr
    Agility~165 hoursHallowed Sepulchre (floors 1–5, grand coffin looting)~98.5k XP/hr

Farming~5.6 hoursTree runs (magic, dragonfruit, mahogany, calquat, etc.)~1.9M XP/hr (effective)
    Cooking~4.8 hours1-tick karambwans~950k XP/hr
    Attack0 (passive)Trained through Slayer; always 0-time—
    Strength0 (passive)Trained through Slayer; always 0-time—
    Hitpoints0 (passive)Trained through all combat; always 0-time—
Magic0 (passive)Casting Magic Imbue and other spells during other activities—
Fletching0 (passive)Fletching darts or bolts during other activities—

The total EHP for all 24 skills lands in the 960 to 980-hour range when you sum individual skill estimates and account for overlapping passive training. With real-world inefficiencies — suboptimal methods, bank-standing, questing, distractions — the practical total for a highly efficient player is closer to 1,000 to 1,100 hours.

Sailing is the biggest variable in this estimate. It is the newest skill, and community consensus on optimal rates is still evolving. TheOatrix’s benchmark of 70 to 80 efficient hours via Barracuda Trials is the working number, but players who invest in a rosewood hull, crystal extractor, and wind catcher can push Gwenith Glide past 200k XP per hour — potentially trimming the Sailing grind toward the lower end of that range. Conversely, anyone training Sailing through Port Tasks or AFK salvaging will spend 100 to 170 hours on it alone.

The Slowest Skills: Where Most of Your Time Goes

Seven skills dominate the total time to max. Together, Agility, Slayer, Mining, Sailing, Woodcutting, Thieving, and Runecrafting account for over 700 of the ~970 EHP — roughly 72% of the total grind. Here is what makes each one so slow:

    Slayer — ~166.5 Hours

Slayer is the single longest skill to max in terms of raw hours, even though its XP rates are not the worst. The reason is simple: you cannot meaningfully speed it up. Slayer XP is gated by task assignment RNG, monster kill speeds, and the fact that efficient Slayer still averages under 100k XP per hour across the full 1–99 journey. The upside is that Slayer passively trains Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Hitpoints, and sometimes Prayer — making those skills 0-time. It is also highly profitable. Most players will earn hundreds of millions of GP from Slayer loot by the time they hit 99, which helps fund the buyable skills.

    Agility — ~165 Hours

Agility’s reputation as the most hated skill in OSRS is well-earned. Even at the Hallowed Sepulchre — the fastest training method in the game at roughly 98.5k XP per hour — you are looking at over 160 hours of near-constant clicking through obstacle courses. There is no AFK method for Agility. Every XP requires active input, and the content is repetitive by design. The Sepulchre at least rewards you with valuable loot (ring of endurance, strange old lockpicks), but it does not change the fundamental reality that Agility is a long, active grind.

    Mining — ~122 Hours

Mining is the slowest gathering skill by a significant margin. The fastest method, 3-tick 4-granite (3t4g), peaks at around 125k XP per hour and is one of the most click-intensive activities in the entire game — comparable to high-level PvM in terms of APM (actions per minute). There are more relaxed alternatives like the Motherlode Mine or Shooting Stars, but those come at a fraction of the XP rate and stretch the grind considerably. If you cannot handle tick manipulation, expect Mining to take 200 to 300+ hours.

    Runecrafting — ~55 Hours

Runecrafting used to be far worse. Before Guardians of the Rift, the Ourania Altar, and the lava rune meta, Runecrafting was routinely a 200+ hour skill. Today, 0+4 lava runes with runners can push 240,000 to 280,000 XP per hour, compressing the grind to around 55 efficient hours. That said, those rates require paying runners — which costs money — or using alternate accounts to supply yourself. Solo lavas are slower. Guardians of the Rift is more engaging and profitable but falls well short of lava rune XP rates. Realistically, most players spend 70 to 100+ hours on Runecrafting.

The Fastest Skills: Where You Can Actually Make Progress

Not every skill is a multi-hundred-hour commitment. The buyable skills — those that can be trained by spending GP — are dramatically faster:

    • Cooking (4.8 hours): 1-tick karambwans at nearly 1 million XP per hour. You can knock out 99 Cooking in a single weekend session and still have time left over.
    • Farming (5.6 hours of active time): Tree runs have an enormous effective XP rate because the actual gameplay takes minutes per day while the XP accumulates from tree growth logs. Over weeks or months, you spend very little hands-on time.
    • Prayer (6.6 hours): Superior dragon bones at the Chaos Altar push 1.8 million XP per hour — but you pay for the speed. More on the cost below.
    • Construction (12.8 hours): Mahogany benches with a demon butler exceed 1 million XP per hour. It is expensive and click-intensive, but over fast.
    • Fletching (0-time): You can fletch darts or bolts while running between other activities, making this a truly passive 99 for anyone willing to multitask.

The pattern is consistent: skills that let you spend money to accelerate training are measured in single-digit or low-double-digit hours. Skills that force you to gather resources or complete fixed-duration tasks (Agility, Slayer, Mining, Sailing) are where the calendar months disappear.

Sailing Deep-Dive: The New Skill That Added 70–80 Hours to Max

Sailing is the newest addition to the maxing grind — and it did not arrive quietly. Released on November 23, 2025 alongside the Pandemonium quest (the skill’s tutorial, started at Port Sarim), Sailing added a 24th skill to the max cape requirement and shifted the total-level target from 2,277 to 2,376. It is also the skill with the most uncertain EHP data, because the community is still discovering optimal routes and the dev team continues to tune rates.

What is clear: Sailing is not a fast skill. At 70 to 80 efficient hours to 99, it ranks as the 4th slowest skill in OSRS — behind only Slayer, Agility, and Mining. It is also one of the most mechanically rich skills in the game, with five distinct training methods and a ship-customization system that ties heavily into Construction.

The Three Barracuda Trials (Fastest Route)

For maximum XP, the path is simple: rush to level 30 through Port Tasks and Sea Charting, then chain the three Barracuda Trials all the way to 99. Each trial is a click-intensive time-attack obstacle course designed for your boat:

TrialLevel Req.XP/hr RangeKey Upgrades RequiredWhat You Do
Tempor Tantrum3060k–70kIron helm, oak mast with linen sailsCollect rum from barracudas while grabbing lost supplies; deliver to Rum-Dashed-Ralph. Up to 3 laps (Marlin tier).
Jubbly Jive5580k–92kInoculation station, mithril helm, mahogany hull recommendedPick up balloon toads, throw at colored flag outcrops to lure Jubbly Birds. Wind Catcher unlock after Shark tier is essential for Marlin runs.
Gwenith Glide72180k–200k+Adamant keel, camphor hull strongly recommended, crystal extractorThe ultimate trial. Navigate crystal-flecked waters near Port Gwenith. With a rosewood hull (93 Sailing, 84 Construction), rates push past 200k XP/hr. Crystal Extractor adds ~10k–15k passive XP per hour.

Each trial has three completion tiers — Swordfish, Shark, and Marlin — with faster times rewarding one-off XP bonuses and unlocking permanent ship upgrades like the Wind Catcher and Crystal Extractor. The Marlin tier also unlocks the best repeatable XP rates.

    The Other Four Training Methods

Not everyone wants to run Barracuda Trials for 70+ hours. Here is how the alternatives compare:

    MethodUnlock LevelTime to 99XP/hr (Peak)IntensityProfit/Loss
Barracuda Trials3070–80 hrs200k+High~350k–500k GP cost (one-off boat upgrades)
Port Tasks (Bounty)3090–100 hrs~200kModerateVariable — cannonballs cost GP; some bounty drops profit
Port Tasks (Courier)1100+ hrs~150kLow–ModerateBreak-even to small profit
    Shipwreck Salvaging15160–170 hrs~90k (87+)Very low (AFK)~20M+ GP profit
Deep Sea Trawling56Hybrid onlyLow Sailing XPModerateProfitable (new fish)

Shipwreck Salvaging deserves special mention. It is the AFK pathway to 99: install a salvaging hook on your boat, park at a shipwreck, and let your crew (from level 40+) do the work. At high levels — particularly with a sloop, a salvaging station (42 Sailing), and Cabin Boy Jenkins (60 Sailing, 4 deckhandiness) — you can pull 85k to 90k XP per hour while barely touching the game. Salvaging also drops the Sailor’s Amulet (1/300 to 1/2,000 depending on spot), which provides essential port teleports, and can net you 20 to 30 million GP in profit by 99 from alchable drops and rare items. If you are playing a second account or working from home, Salvaging is the Sailing method that respects your time.

Sailing & Construction: The Hidden Synergy

Sailing does not exist in a vacuum. Your Construction level directly gates how fast you can train it. The highest-tier ship upgrades require up to 84 Construction (rosewood hull, 93 Sailing), and players who rush 87 Construction for the max POH will already have access to every Sailing ship upgrade in the game. Conversely, if you are maxing from scratch, you will need to invest significant Construction time — which the EHP table already accounts for (12.8 efficient hours) — before you can build the camphor and rosewood hulls that make Gwenith Glide hit 200k+ XP per hour.

For players on a budget, the Shipwright NPC at any large port can construct core boat parts up to mahogany/mithril tier for a fee, bypassing the Construction requirement entirely for mid-level upgrades. But the high-tier camphor, ironwood, and rosewood parts must be built yourself — and they are expensive. A rosewood skiff hull alone costs over 5 million GP in materials. A rosewood sloop hull runs north of 11 million GP.

    Sea Charting: 691k Free XP

Before you commit entirely to Barracuda Trials, do your charting. Sea Charting — exploring and documenting points of interest across all 70 ocean regions — rewards a cumulative 691,000 Sailing XP for full completion, plus ocean-completion bonuses ranging from 2k to 35k XP per ocean. Full completion also unlocks the Horizon’s Lure keg drink, which provides a permanent +2.5% Sailing XP boost on all activities. It is not game-changing, but it shaves roughly 2 hours off the total grind if you unlock it early — and the Runelite Sailing plugin makes charting trivially easy by highlighting every location and hiding completed spots.

How Much GP Does It Cost to Max?

The gold cost of maxing depends entirely on how fast you want to go. The general rule: you trade GP for time. Faster methods cost more. Slower methods cost less — or even profit.

Here is what the expensive buyable skills cost at their fastest efficient rates:

    SkillFast MethodEstimated Cost to 99
PrayerSuperior dragon bones at Chaos Altar$150M–$250M GP
    ConstructionMahogany benches$80M–$150M GP
HerbloreSaradomin brews / stamina potions$50M–$100M GP
    CraftingBlack d’hide bodies$30M–$60M GP
    SmithingBlast Furnace gold$25M–$50M GP
FletchingDragon darts (fastest) or broad bolts (cheaper)$20M–$80M GP

Add in the costs for Firemaking (redwood logs), Farming (tree seeds), cooking supplies, runes for Magic, and Sailing’s ship upgrades (350k for Barracuda Trials, or millions for high-tier hulls if you go beyond the minimum), and the total cost of efficiently maxing all buyable skills lands somewhere in the 500 million to 1 billion+ GP range. This is offset significantly by the profit from Slayer, bossing, Runecrafting (wrath runes at high levels), Shipwreck Salvaging (20M+), and other moneymaking activities you will naturally do during the grind. Many maxed players report that Slayer alone funded most or all of their buyable skills.

If you are on a budget, every buyable skill has cheaper alternatives. Using dragon bones instead of superior dragon bones roughly halves the Prayer cost. Oak or teak Construction is far cheaper than mahogany. The trade-off is time — cheap methods can double or triple the hours spent on a skill.

How Long Maxing Takes for Real Players

EHP is a useful benchmark, but it assumes near-perfect play: tick manipulation, zero bank-standing, optimal route planning, and the mental stamina to maintain high-intensity methods for hours on end. Most players do not train this way — and honestly, most should not try.

Here is how the time breaks down across three realistic player profiles:

Player TypeEstimated Hours to MaxWhat This Looks Like
Hyper-Efficient1,000–1,500 hoursTick manipulation, alts for supplies, near-zero downtime, following EHP guides exactly. Equivalent to playing 6+ hours every day for 6–8 months.
Pretty Efficient2,000–2,500 hoursGood methods, some AFK time, minimal tick manipulation, occasional bank-standing. Equivalent to 2–3 hours daily for roughly 2.5–3.5 years.
Casual / AFK-Heavy3,000–4,500+ hoursRelaxed methods (Motherlode Mine, redwoods, monkfish, Shipwreck Salvaging, etc.), lots of AFK, doing non-XP activities like questing and minigames along the way. Can take 4–6+ years of regular play.

Even at a solid 2,500 hours, maxing is a multi-year commitment for anyone with a job, school, or other responsibilities. That is the equivalent of over 100 full 24-hour days of in-game time — more than three months of your life spent entirely inside Gielinor.

Grind It or Buy It: The Real Trade-Off

At some point during the research phase — probably right around the time you saw “165 hours of Agility” — you may have asked yourself: is it actually worth it to grind this myself?

That is not an unreasonable question. Let us put the numbers side by side:

OptionTime CostGP / Real Money CostWhat You Get
Max it yourself (efficient)1,000–1,500 hours500M–1B+ GP spent on buyablesThe accomplishment, game knowledge, and a fully self-made account
Max it yourself (casual)3,000–4,500+ hoursVaries (less spent on fast methods, more time spent earning GP)The same, but stretched over several years
Buy a maxed accountA few hours (research + setup)$300–$1,500+ depending on extras (Infernal Cape, raid kc, collection log, pets)Immediate access to all endgame content, raids, and PvM — with none of the skilling grind

At the U.S. federal minimum wage, 2,500 hours of time is worth over $18,000 before taxes — and realistically, most people considering this decision value their leisure time higher than minimum wage. From a pure time-value perspective, spending a few hundred dollars on a maxed account can look like a bargain compared to spending thousands of hours clicking virtual rocks and rooftops.

That said, buying an account is not the right choice for everyone. If you enjoy the journey — the slow progression, the milestone unlocks, the sense of ownership over an account you built from Tutorial Island — then no marketplace purchase can replace that experience. Maxing is a marathon, and for many players, the marathon is the point.

But if your goal is endgame PvM, raiding with friends, or simply enjoying everything OSRS has to offer without committing years of your life to skilling, a marketplace purchase gets you there immediately. The key is doing it safely.

How to Buy a Maxed OSRS Account Safely

If you decide buying is the right path, understand the risks upfront. Jagex’s rules prohibit real-world trading and account sharing, which means any account purchase carries some level of inherent risk. The goal is to minimize that risk as much as possible.

Here is what safe account buying looks like in 2026:

    1. Registered Email Transfer Is Non-Negotiable

With the Jagex account system now standard, the single most important factor in a safe purchase is full control of the registered email. If a seller cannot or will not transfer the email the account is registered to, walk away. Without it, the original owner can recover the account through Jagex support at any time — weeks, months, or even years after the sale — using original creation details, billing history, and IP records. Whoever controls the email controls the account.

    2. Use a Marketplace With Escrow Protection

Never send payment directly to a seller through Discord, PayPal friends-and-family, cryptocurrency, or any method that does not hold funds in escrow. On a marketplace like PlayerBay, your payment is held securely until you confirm that you have received the account credentials and taken ownership. If the seller disappears, delivers an account that does not match the listing, or refuses to transfer the registered email, you can dispute the transaction and recover your funds.

    3. Secure the Account Immediately After Purchase

The moment you receive the credentials, work through this checklist in order:

    1. Change the registered email to one only you control.
    2. Change the account password to something unique.
    3. Remove all old recovery information: backup emails, phone numbers, and recovery questions set by the previous owner.
    4. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your own device through the Jagex account security portal.
    5. Check linked accounts (Google, Steam, Apple, Facebook) and remove any connections the seller left behind.
    6. Set or change the bank PIN immediately.

These steps take 10 minutes and are the difference between owning the account and borrowing it until the original owner decides to take it back.

    4. Verify the Account Matches the Listing

Before confirming delivery on any marketplace, verify:

    • Total level and individual skills match the listing — check the OSRS Hiscores yourself.
    • Quest points and Quest Cape eligibility if advertised.
    • Untradeable items like the Fire Cape, Infernal Cape, and Ava’s assembler are actually on the account.
    • Bank value aligns with what was described.
    • Account type (main, ironman, hardcore, ultimate) is correct — these restrictions cannot be undone.
    • No prior RWT or botting flags — a seller with a clear transaction history and verified status on PlayerBay is far less likely to sell flagged accounts.

    5. Check Seller Reputation

On PlayerBay, every seller has a public profile with completed orders, buyer reviews, and a reputation score. Before purchasing, look for:

    • A verified seller badge
    • Multiple completed OSRS account sales with positive reviews
    • Recent reviews that mention smooth delivery and clean account history
    • Detailed listing descriptions that disclose account history, not vague one-liners

Sellers who are vague about registration history, rush you to complete the deal off-platform, or refuse to show the account in-game before purchase are red flags. There is no reason a legitimate seller cannot provide transparency.

Approximately 960 to 1,100 hours of in-game time for all 24 skills (including Sailing) using the fastest training methods with near-perfect execution. The pre-Sailing record of 771 hours by He Box Jonge (23 skills) demonstrates what is possible at the absolute ceiling. With Sailing adding 70 to 80 efficient hours, the theoretical minimum now sits in the 850 to 900-hour range, though no verified post-Sailing run under 900 hours has been submitted yet.

Most players who actively pursue maxing as a goal will spend 2,000 to 3,500 hours. This accounts for using good but not perfect methods, some AFK time, bank-standing, questing, and the natural inefficiencies of human play. Over 2,500 hours at 2–3 hours per day, that is roughly 2.5 to 3.5 years of consistent play.

By efficient hours, Slayer and Agility are effectively tied for slowest at around 165–166 hours each. Slayer is gated by task RNG and kill speeds. Agility is gated by low base XP rates — even the best method (Hallowed Sepulchre) barely cracks 100k XP per hour. Mining is third at around 122 efficient hours, and Sailing now ranks fourth at 70 to 80 hours — making it one of the seven skills that collectively eat over 70% of your total maxing time.

70 to 80 hours at maximum efficiency through Barracuda Trials (Tempor Tantrum → Jubbly Jive → Gwenith Glide). The AFK route via Shipwreck Salvaging takes 160 to 170 hours but profits 20M+ GP. Port Tasks fall in between at roughly 90 to 100 hours. Sea Charting provides 691k one-off XP and unlocks a permanent +2.5% XP boost, so do it early regardless of your chosen method.

Yes — indirectly. The highest-tier ship upgrades that push Barracuda Trial XP rates past 200k per hour require up to 84 Construction (rosewood hull). However, the minimum boat requirements for all three trials are accessible at much lower Construction levels, and the Shipwright NPC can build core parts up to mahogany/mithril tier for a fee, bypassing Construction requirements entirely for mid-level setups. If you are already planning to max, your Construction training will naturally unlock Sailing upgrades along the way.

If you exclude 0-time skills (Fletching, Magic, etc.), Cooking is the fastest at around 4.8 efficient hours using 1-tick karambwans. Farming has a similar total active-time requirement (~5.6 hours) but is spread across weeks or months of daily tree runs. Prayer (6.6 hours) and Construction (12.8 hours) round out the fastest buyable skills.

Using efficient (fast) methods, expect to spend 500 million to 1 billion+ GP on buyable skills — primarily Prayer, Construction, Herblore, Crafting, Smithing, and Fletching. Sailing adds roughly 350k to 500k for the minimum Barracuda Trial boat upgrades, or several million if you invest in camphor and rosewood hulls. This is significantly offset by profit from Slayer (which can earn 300M–500M+ GP on the road to 99), Runecrafting, Shipwreck Salvaging (20M+), Hunter, and other profitable activities. Many players fund their entire maxing journey through Slayer and bossing alone.

As of June 1, 2026, there are 47,334 maxed players (2,376 total level with Sailing) across all account types, according to the OSRS Wiki. OSRS is currently adding maxed accounts at roughly 76 per day — significantly faster than RS3’s rate of about 9 per day.

It depends on your goals. If you value the journey, the sense of accomplishment, and the deep game knowledge that comes from training every skill yourself, grinding is the right call. If your goal is to jump straight into endgame raids, Inferno, and high-level PvM without spending 2,500+ hours skilling, buying a maxed account can be the smarter use of your time — provided you purchase through a secure marketplace with escrow protection and follow all account security steps immediately after delivery.

Yes — this is the single most common risk in the OSRS account market. The original owner can attempt to recover the account through Jagex support using creation details, billing history, and original IP addresses. The best defense is full registered email control: once you change the registered email to one only you own, remove all old recovery information, and enable 2FA on your device, the original owner’s recovery path is heavily restricted. This is why buying from marketplaces that guarantee registered email transfer is so important.

    The Bottom Line

Maxing in OSRS is not the longest grind in MMO history — but it is in the conversation. At the absolute peak of human efficiency, it takes around 960 to 1,100 hours across 24 skills. For a dedicated but sane player, it takes 2,000 to 3,500 hours spread across several years of consistent play. And for a casual player who just wants to enjoy the game without min-maxing every tick, it can take well over 4,000 hours.

The skills that eat most of your time — Agility, Slayer, Mining, and now Sailing — are the ones where money cannot buy you speed (or can only buy it indirectly, in Sailing’s case, through Construction-gated ship upgrades). The skills where money can buy speed — Prayer, Construction, Herblore, Cooking — are over so fast you will barely remember training them. That asymmetry is what makes maxing feel uneven: months of slow grinding punctuated by brief, expensive bursts of rapid progress.

Sailing’s arrival added roughly 70 to 80 hours to the efficient max cape grind — not the longest skill, but firmly in the top tier of time-consumers, and a fresh wrinkle for anyone who was close to maxing before November 2025. It is also the most dynamic addition to the game’s skilling meta in years, with genuine gameplay variety that makes its 70-to-80-hour grind feel less punishing than, say, Agility’s 165-hour click-fest.

For some players, that uneven journey is exactly what makes the Max Cape meaningful. For others, it is exactly why buying a maxed account makes sense. There is no wrong answer — only the question of what your time is worth.

If you decide grinding is not the path for you, browse verified maxed and near-maxed OSRS accounts on the PlayerBay marketplace. Every seller is reviewed, every transaction is escrow-protected, and you can compare listings to find an account that matches the build, unlocks, and budget you have in mind.
